well ive been exercising mums ponio for a while now as shes soooo busy with work. Problem is that over the last month or so ponio has started to mature and bulk up. her saddle is seriously slipping back as her shoulders are now mahooosive.
the fit of the saddle is ok - not too wide but will get a saddler to check it over but in the meantime was thinking of getting something to help hold it in place.
was thinking of with breatplate, ealstic breast girth or elastic breastcollar.
what do you think i should go for?
anyone prefer one to another?why?

Not sure if it is what you want but I have brought a N.E.W non-slip pad from Ebay for my cob who's saddle slips because he is so round, and it really helps!

well ive been thinking of one of those as well. I bought one from York sales but was too small.
do you like the pad? does it stop it from slipping. We also have the same problem now with the saddle slipping round when getting on.

I do like the pad, you can feel how grippy it is when you try and take the saddle of. I do still get someone to hold the stirrup for me when I get on but I think that is my own paranoia. It’s nice as well because it’s a thin pad it won’t affect the fit of the saddle. I would recommend one! I brought a full size for a cob size saddle and it is a little large but I prefer that.

Ummm, not sure, I just brought the normal one for Blacks but his saddle is cut more like a jumping saddle then a dressage saddle even though it's a GP. The normal one is standard nummah shape. Difficult one.

Could it be that as she has muscled up the saddle is now too narrow and her shoulders are pushing it back?
You could try a limpet pad, heard they are good for slipping saddles. Think they are in the Derby House catalogue.

Louby,
when the saddle is in the correct postion the saddle is fine in width. I think anything wider and it would be pressing on her withers. I know what you mean about it being pushed back by the shoulders though.
Looking at getting either a N.E.W one or a limpet to see if they help her.

I had the same problem with my cob the shoulders were pushing the saddle back and hurting his back had a new saddle made and also put me an elastic breast girth on, this do's help also a girth without any elastic on it.

Is the saddle actually sitting too far forward and then being pushed back by the shoulders. The majority pf people I see who claim their saddle slips back are actually trying ot get it to stay too far forward. Breast plating will keep it forward but will restrict the shoulders and cause discomfort.

The saddle should sit behind the shoulder blades - and check both shoulders as invariably one is larger than the other.

It is very very rare that a correctly girthed saddle slips too far back

bosworth,
i place the saddle far up then slide it into place - making sure it is not too far forward. Girth her up but by the time weve had a good trot it can have slipped upto 8 inches backwards - she looks like shes got a donkey saddle on when you see how far the girth goes back. It sometimes gets soo bad that when you look at it its resting so far back towards her last rib/kidneys etc. Will have to take a photo of her.

pls note - this is the 1st year she has seriously been ridden. She is also a welsh D so is now starting to getting the shape of a D- big neck and shoulders.

Had same problem - saddle slipped back on one of mine (on another one it slipped sideways but thats a different problem!). I use a thin saddle cloth with one of those poly pad pods on top (only because my boy is cold backed, if yours isnt then less bulk the better). And I use an elastic breastgirth which I find is better than the usual leather breastplate, although for SJ or XC I use both! And someone recommended me a Stubben String girth which I got and it works very well, so highly recommend those. I got mine off Ebay.
