I’m really picky with reins. The ones I have are really soft rubber ones (biogrip?) I’ve noticed recently, however, that after I’ve cleaned my tack, they seem quite slippy if I ride without gloves. Should I not be using saddle soap on them? I know the answer is probably just to wear gloves but it’s been quite warm recently.

I don't put anything on the rubbery bit of reins.
Tbh I put very little on my reins full stop, other than the ends where they attach to the bit. I mainly use leather reins and find gunge of any kind reduces my grip.

What saddle soap are you using? And are you putting it on the rubber?
I’m using soft saddle soap - the jelly stuff in a pot. I don’t put it directly onto the reins but work it into the sponge and then clean the rubber bit with that.

Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong...

Don't put any kind of leather soap on them just wash with water, I find that kind of soap just sits on the leather anyway and it's not great for the leather as many have glycerine, buy a nice conditioner it's much better it will sink into the leather making it soft, I wash my bridle with warm water to get scurf and dirt off then just condition it.

Thanks. I’m going to try without cleaner. I do also have a nice conditioning balm I use after cleaning. (Not on the rubber bits though).

Daft question- Is glycerine not good for leather? When I was younger, all saddle soap was glycerine-based.

No it's not great because it just sits on the top making it slimy it doesn't do anything for the leather.
