3.5yo traditional gelding. I bought him just before his first birthday and he's been with a friend of mine for nearly a year. Wormed regularly (and correctly for season) and worm-counted. Has always been happy and healthy but had a bout of colic about six weeks ago, grumbly tum for 72 hours, under par, not eating. Vet came two or three times and gave oral Buscopan which eventually did the job and pony then perked up and has been fine since. Three days ago his poo turned VERY runny... quoted as "explosions in stable" overnight. No change in diet or hay (fed fibre forage, no straights) and this time no grumbly sounds, still happy and eating well, just very very runny. Not due to be wormed but she's just given him one to be on the safe side. She's thinking of trying Pink Powder. If no better tomorrow she'll ring the vet, but in the meantime, my mind has gone blank. Anyone got any ideas/suggestions as to why this might have happened?

Thanks

Hi, thank you Domane for posting this for us.

Just to add that I have had the same hay supply for over 16 weeks now. Just coming to the last bale but the next bales are from the same farmer and the same field. So Im not thinking a hay issue. Plus I have 2 other cobs on the same hay with no effects.

Considering his young age and the fact there is no apparent trigger i would be getting vet to check for worm damage.

A good worming regime is sadly no guarantee against internal damage from worms in a young horse.

I would not normally be so dramatic, but the absence of an obvious explanation or trigger and the fact has been worsened by hay set off alarm bells.I *think* hay sometimes causes problems in horses with worm damage (and the symptoms are runny poo) as it's much coarser and they find it more difficult to digest.

Domane-can you check with newforest on NR about how her filly who was ill through worm damage presented initially??

Hopefully am way off and is something much simpler and nothing to get concerned about, but if have nothing else to go on at the mo then maybe worth asking the vet to check out??

Thank you Devonlass. If it were damage through worms and the hay worsened it, wouldnt it present itself in the runny poo from the first week or two of feeding the hay? And not about 10 weeks in??
