I have got a new horse on loan she is an Irish sports horse 15hh a bit bigger than my previous laid back barely 14hh haffy the problem is she takes way more encouragement than I believe is normal to even walk she’s a fussy horse and I’m a different rider and it’s not like she doesn’t go I have seen her owner on her and she schools perfectly I think she’s just taking the mick because I’m only small (around 5ft) it’s frustrating because I know she can go but I feel like I’m not doing the right things due to having to stop with the haffy who I thought was slow (retired now) he seems absolutely rapid compared to her it’s probably me and my riding faults and the fact that I’m used to the bond I had with Chester (haffy) who I would trust with my life any help at all appreciated

Has her owner ridden her recently? What was she like when you tried her?

My cob will take the mick with new riders but is often reluctant to move forward if a rider isn’t balanced.

I’d suggest speaking to her owner and ruling out anything medical/saddle fit related and then having some lessons

She has not been on the yard I’m in very long only since the summer and her owner hasn’t schooled her in our arena only hacked I’m having a lesson with my usual instructor on Tuesday hopefully it helps, when I tried her she was the exact same as she is now not really had her long we know she’s very fussy with tack she bucks if there’s even a tiny peice of hay there so if there was a problem we would know

My cob will have days where he will take the mick, it used to be similar to you but now he will move off the leg and go faster but not forwards so Im having to slow him within the gaits to get him to sit back on his hind quarters more

it is worth noting he wasn’t really schooled before I started riding him, he couldn’t bend, he had one speed in walk and trot and canter was just full speed ahead, had absolutely no idea what leg to move over meant

It might even be that because you are small you aren't giving the leg aids in the same place she is used to so she doesn't quite understand you. We had the opposite problem with my mare when my sister rode. She is much taller than me, 6" in fact so her leg came further down and that really worried my girl having only been ridden by me up to then. Of course she might just be taking the mick.

Ok don't worry.... One less than ideal ride is not the end of the world, no reason to panic or be desperate, although I do understand it's disappointing. Is the Irish sports horse the one called Penny?

Looking at the videos of you riding her, she is a sweetheart but lessons are definitely what you need - unfortunately it does take time for a new horse/rider partnership to get used to each other. It might be useful if you asked your instructor specifically to help you on your leg aids which might help her feel less sluggish. She's lovely, best of luck with her:)
