I'm working on keeping the pony in a rhythmic, regular trot as his party piece is to do the fastest trot possible, get unbalanced and trot even faster. His trot is something like a sewing machine - really really fast. He's also quite strong and "hot". I know I need to slow him down with my body and not just use my hands but he just races off and I find it really hard to slow him down with my rising. (bear in mind my friend rode him and stuck to sitting trot as she couldn't rise fast enough to keep up with him, even at reasonable speed!) Half halting works if I get it in early but today once he got going it was really hard to stop him without using hand and voice to stop completely. I'm finding I'm tipping forwards as well and our trot is getting faster and faster.

Any tips to slow down (before my knees give up!)

I have one who can be a bit like this when he wants! Lots of w/t and t/h transitions, avoiding long periods of constant trot works for us..
start in walk and literally squeeze your bum cheeks and try and block his motion with your seat when you want him to stop, giving your reins a squeeze to back it up, repeat until he understands what the bum squeezing means, and you don't have to use the reins so much. Then move up to trot and repeat, bringing him back to walk.
Thats what we do, anyway :D

Ditto Quirky.
My lad is trotterx, the only way I can slow him down is by half halting and keeping my rises to a minimum at the same time, he comes to my speed, I'd be worn out trying to rise to his trot, practise makes perfect, he is getting quicker at slowing down and coming on to the bit, then he has a lovely trot, it can be done

Do mostly sitting trot, insisting that he trots slowly. Put in a few strides of rising trot, then sit again. When this is established, increase the rising strides.

Lots & lots of transitions, & get into the habit of half-halting as soon as you get a hint of too fast. Once trotting, rise at the speed you want, not him. Also helps to sit tall & imagine your pushing down with your seat bones like brakes. ( just make sure you only use the seatbone thing when it is needed tho, doesn't help them to lift their backs at all, but better than pulling reins).
