Small disaster?!!

My precious 4 year old is in foal! No idea when it is due - sometime between December and February the vets think! 2 options for the father, if born after January the sire will be a nice well bred colt who's breeding is known, if born before then it could be anything from an ISH to a cob with all variations in between. I bought her in May and she has been in steady work all summer building up to hunting early season. I thought she was a bit weak and had decided to give her until early January off and then bring her back for late hunting and hunter trials aiming to do BE in the summer. No small wonder she seemed weak and never got fitter, poor baby she must be so honest.

Anyway, net result - I have no horse for at least 10 months and a foal that I can't afford. All round not the best piece of news I've had lately.

Bit of a pointless post really, just looking for sympathy!
 
OMG, poor you, has she been putting on huge amounts of weight that are unexplainable.
I know people say BOGOF but its the keeping it all that time before you can do anything with it.
Oh well Ive thought of a name for the new arrival- Suprise! (how original)
 
Pop this in breeding - you will get some very good advice on there, but may also get some help on making a claim against the seller....

That is so true! I have worked out that it will cost me (before any vets bills) £1,500 approx to keep her and the baby for about 10 months. That would be all well and good if I could at least ride her and enjoy myself but I can't and will just have to admire her standing in her stable in the field. Doubtless she will have to be virtually re-broken as well and that will be at a time of year that I am flat out at work and don't have the time or the help to do it. In fact the more I think about it the more of a disaster it is.

thanks amymay, I will do. I have never had a mare and foal before and so am pretty uncertain of the best care. I also will have nowhere to turn her out soon when it gets wet and no friend because he is now back in work and only goes out for a few hours a day as he hates the wet and cold.

One of the first priorities is to find a yard with mare and foal turnout. She can't be expected to stay in - pregnant or not.

What part of the country are you in??
 
I'm in Somerset - not far from Wincanton. I have arranged for her to go to a yard for the next few weeks where she will be out full time but fed and looked after. They have an old mare for company and lots of grass. Trouble is their yard is about 40 mins drive from me (very expensive to do twice a day) and once it is wet they can only be turned out daily and so for the YO's to bring her in at night they would (quite understandably) want full livery which I can't afford. The ground down here gets so wet that everyone gets in a flap the minute it rains.
 
There are a few posters on here from your neck of the woods who may well be able to help.

Contact Spaniel or Nativeponies - they may have some useful suggestions...
 
Poor you - I expect you had her training plan marked out and was ready to go. I'm sure she will come back nicely - its amazing how much they remember!

Don't forget, that amazing JA pony Mr Polo had a similar beginning, being an unwanted/unplanned foal! :p
 
Oh, dear. Poor you and your mare.
They say every cloud has a silver lining, you may just have to be patient though. A cracking foal may arise!

Just for the record, Iam not too far away from Wincanton, so if ever you need help, or just someone to talk to, remember me! (there is also a few spare stables here and daytime winter grazing too, could also 'lend' you a companion pony.)

That is so kind, thank you. My head is in such a spin atm and haven't really worked out what to do but would it be ok to pm you to have a chat about ideas?
 
my friend had a similar thing but it did not get picked up till the farrier noticed, it was a little pony had a foal in irland fot brought over and obviously just got caught by a stallion out there before she got brought over, the people that had her exercised her and were jumping her over like 3ft cross country jumps they wondered how she had got fat soooo quickly but she was just becoming alot more muscled the vet did not notice when they had her vetted either it was not till the farrier was doing her hind shoes and noticed that something was not quite right with her as she was looking a odd shape they got the vet out adn the next month they had a lovly little foal that was no worse having been round a 3ft cross country cource already :P
