I've just had a quote for insuring the house and farm which was a nasty shock.

Basically, it is a very small house, 30 acres, steel frame barn, and the usual farm machinery. I also get occasional voluntary help with 10 ponies.

Can anyone advise? I suspect I may be over insured. I live in a low crime area and have only made a few small claims in the last 40 years.

Farmers and mercantile have taken a lot of business off NFU in the last few years, and reports on farming forums re aftercare seems ok. I don't have anything with them so not biased.

As mentioned, try Farmers & Mercantile but also maybe Lycetts Insurance Brokers - they both have a smallholders policy they offer (I know as I work for the insurance company who underwrites one of these policies they offer. They do work with other providers though so would be able to find you the best premium.

We use Cornish Mutual and are really pleased with them. They have written a special policy for us to include several small-scale things including renting out a barn as an office, selling turkeys at Christmas, using a barn as a workshop/store, hay making, keeping horses, our veg garden and other somewhat odd smallholding things that hubby dabbles in!They spent ages looking at exactly what we do and the premium is really reasonable.
