Just finishing off building a small holding one barn 3 internal stables & 3.5 acre field - and wondering how to go about insuring it - what do you do ? if anyone can recommend a company ? is there such a thing as on line quotes ? or do you have a visit from insurance company ? and if its not a rude question ! how much do you pay for yours ?

CLA. I wouldn't touch the NFU with a barge pole. As B has said, price will depend on what you want to insure.

Yes I did ask the question at NFU stand and just got the impression they wanted to rip me off I was hoping there would be an off the peg type system on the internet somewhere - Thank you both for your replies

Google "small holder insurance" and similar. There is a comparison site somewhere but, frankly, I didn't find it a lot of use. Most participants wanted me to insure land and building separately from the house and I wanted "all in one".

I got a £7,000 pay out from CLA for flood damage last year and expected my premiums to go through the roof. They didn't although other insurers quoted ridiculous prices at the mention of flooding. My only grumble is that the CLA (in fact, Aviva) did not go after a neighbour who allowed a culvert to become blocked and then did nothing until served a legal notice. I had hoped they'd claim off him but I suppose a court battle could have been more expensive for them.
