Small lumps under the skin (Muscular?)

I have a 12yr old mare with about half a dozen small lumps under the skin scattered in the region where the saddle sits either side of the spine. They feel hard to the touch and are about the size of a pea. Can anyone offer any advice?

That was my first thought but the saddle was checked by a local saddler a few months ago and she's not changed much since then.

On hacks she has a bad habit of jogging when she knows she is heading home so maybe that could be contributing?

Is there any chance it could be related to somthing else?

Yes jogging will increase the lateral(side to side) movement but that tends to rub the hair at the back of the saddle.
I am assuming from your name that you are a man! - Heavier riders (over 12 stone) tend to increase the chance of pressure related problems because of the basics of pressure being passed onto the back in terms of pounds per square inch, this restricts the flow of blood to the skin and can cause these problems - think of how your leg feels if you sit on it too long and it goes "dead".
If your saddle is not too tight on the shoulder then the use of a proper prolite pad can alleviate most of the pressure issues.

Before anyone accuses me of being "fatist" I used to weigh 14.5 stone so i really do know how weight affects a back.

My youngsters got lumps at the moment, again

its been going on now since November, they come then they go, hes been on antibiotics buts theyve been infected, hes had them on his face and theyve wept, hes been clipped washed daily in hibiscrub, had his food changed and cut right back to basics, but still they keep coming back. they are somtimes itchy and somtimes tender, hence the bute to help with inflamation and soreness.
Vets been out numerous times and still cant put our finger on what it is, its def some kind of allergy, but to what, i havent got a clue.
I would keep my eye on them, maybe wipe over wiht a cool sponge see if they reduce in size. My boys started off like little peas under the skin then got bigger and flatter, good luck hope thye go, its very disheartening

Thanks for the posts. It sounds very much like the symptoms of collegen necrosis as described in the post below. She had recently had a lifestyle change from full turn out to being stabled at night. Maybe she had had a reaction to somthing in the stable which caused this reaction.
