This evening after my horse had his tea i noticed he had a blood coming out of one of his nostrils. It wasnt alot at all - not dripping but a bit bloody - like he had sneezed it out) but enough for me to grab a tea towel and wipe it up so a few spots nothing major - bit like if he was to sneeze and a bit of snot came out - that sort of amount maybe a tiny bit more. He was ridden this morning as usual and has been in today due to the heavy rain. As far as i know he didnt bash his nose as i was outside his stable sorting out my mare and he's very spooky so def would of heard him if he bashed it. The only thing thats different about today is that i rode him this morning and he was soaked through so i left him in his stable all day with his net and a cooler on to dry off. He's normally out all day in at night.
Absolutley fine in himself, eating etc - happened about 4ish today - i checked 15 mins after, 1 hour after and about half hour ago (lucky they live at home) and no sign of any blood at all and again hes fine. He's 12 years old and very fit and well. Owned him since a yearling and never had a nose bleed before. Now i am worried - please someone tell me i am over reacting!! I have had a fair few horses over the years and can't remember any having a nose bleed.
Thank you!!!

If it's from one nostril, and a trickle, it's probably nothing serious. If it's from both, that can indicate a bleed in the lungs.
Given that you kept him stabled today, it might be that he's reacting to dust in his hay or from his bedding. Try turning him out tomorrow, and soak his haynet for at least 7 minutes.

I used to look after a pony who would get the occasional nosebleed (just a little trickle from one nostril). No cause was found but I noticed that it seemed to happen when the weather was particularly dry, so I wondered if it was linked to that.

Nosebleeds don't always happen because of something he did that day. He could have given his head a whack a day or two ago and it's just starting to show now. Or he could have gone for a yeehaa round the field popped some blood vessels or capillaries but the results are only just coming through now.

There are many, many reasons for nosebleeds. I would keep an eye out for more over the next couple of days and if it's the same as today then he has bashed his head. If no more appear then I would put it down to coughing or sneezing a bit more than usual if he has been kept in.

I would not worry in the slightest. Honestly. It might seem scary but in reality 99% of nosebleeds are harmless. One of my own was a bad bleeder from his racing days. He had bad lungs and whenever he went for his 6 monthly hooley round the field he would guaranteed have a nosebleed within 24 hours and it was always a proper one. But I worked with him as a racehorse and after so I looked after him for the best part of 15 years and it was just him.

My horse had about 5 nose bleeds in the space of 3 weeks this time last year. Never had one before or since so i assume she bashed her face/nose on something at some point which made her nose more sensitive and even a gentle knock would set it off again. Had vet look as she was having vaccs anyway, vet found nothing of interest
