My TB has a 10p size wound on his hock from rolling which he keeps opening up...what should I put on it? Have tried the cure all Sudacreme and vaseline (not together), and thicker bed - he's on rubber matting and shavings. This happens every winter when they are in more - is there a magic gloop out there?!

My friend had this problem with her horse recently. She increased the thickness of the bed with additional shavings (some of mine that were used but clean) and it managed to prevent the horse making it worse. Until that point the horse was digging his bed and scraping his hock onto the concrete floor.

You could use hock boots as well.

I find the hypocare spray really good for minor injuries. Currently using on a horse who scrapped open the front of his leg, He is too sore to allow us to wash it with hibi scrub so just been spraying it with that. Was at risk of infection and we are a week later and its looking good (touch wood!!)

ETA his hair is already starting to grow back

We used Aluspray on ours who had a small wound on his hock that he kept rubbing open. Gradually it shrank and healed. If he will wear hock boots then I would recommend them when he's in.

My horse recently had a wound on his hock and the vet gave us a can of aluminium wound spray - despite leaving a silver mark on him (looked very christmassy!) it worked wonders!

Thanks everyone...in desperation I had bought Derma Gel spray on a recommendation..it was quite expensive..anyone tried it? A deeper bed and more turnout would help I know..but he churns down to the rubber matting as he LOVES to roll, and we are all struggling with turnut..Spring is round the corner!

Just read about Hypocare..it does sound more potent than Derma Gel..b*m, wish I had waited longer for your helpful replies..now know what to try next.

another vote for aluspray. Its breathable, healing properties and coats in a film which lasts approx 24 hours. - but need to put on dry skin/hair.
