I was sent flying this evening by half a ton of black warmblood who was VERY keen to be in his stable. Tried to get out of the way but didn't quite make it and he sent me flying with his shoulder and I landed face forward on both hands and one knee. Skinned knee, sore palms of my hands and an immediately swollen little finger. Finger's now gone an odd colour and is swollen to about twice it's normal size. Normal finger shape but very painful and hard to bend. Do you think it could be broken? Would you bother to ring your GP in the morning? Or just wait for it to go down?

Well it does sound as if you may have broken it. I have two very wonky little fingers from various accidents (and a couple of others too!

). If it is broken there is pretty much nothing they can do for it. It may help to strap it to the neighbouring finger to stabilise it but the worse thing is not being able to bend it. I would be taking lots of arnica (tablets and cream) to help with the bruising and healing, ibuprofen for the pain (also anti inflammatory) and sit with your finger in a bag of frozen peas/sweetcorn/ice cubes (whatever is in your freezer!

) and sit with it slighty raised as I found mine hurt more when hanging downwards as the blood pressure built up.

Hope you are feeing better soon and the horse is suitably contrite.

Horse not in the least contrite. Yes, finger definitely more painful if held downwards. Very hot now and very swollen and tight but I'm b****ered if I'm going to drive to A&E this time of night and sit for 4 hours slowly going insane. I'm feeling very sorry for myself. If it doesn't explode or drop off in the night, might go down to GP in the morning. Good for a laugh.

I had a finger injury, as I already have three broken fingers I assumed it was the same. Didn't do anything for about three weeks, when the pain and swelling weren't getting better I saw my GP, who reckoned it was an insect bite. Then my son got a whiplash injury when he was banger racing, and when I took him to A & E the nurse clocked my finger, and said it was a Mallet injury. This means the ligament has come off the bone, and in my case there has been a small fracture. This happened in June, after two 8 week periods of wearing a splint to on avail, I have been referred to a hand specialist to see if there's any chance of surgery. My finger droops, is swollen and painful, catches on pockets, is ALWAYS getting knocked, and now the little finger next to it is shrinking as it doesn't get used!
So I probably would get it checked out, as the Orthapedic I saw thinks the original delay in splinting is why mine hasn't healed.

Big ouchie! sounds like its broken, and mallet injury could be as well....sounds similar to my husbands one...he had to wear a splint on it for 6 weeks as well, and its still a bit misshaped. Lots of arnica and frozen peas and best to get it checked! Hugs.

I would get it exrayed i have broken 3 fingers and the first two healed by just taping the broken one to the finger next to it.
The third one which i was not going to bother having checked hurt so much i went to the hostpital three days after the accident ended up being a spiral fracture and as had to have a contration that covered the finger and went up the wrist on both sides of my hands.
It still does not have full movement and is 1/3 of the size of my other fingers and the injury is 15 years old so its nackered.

Have you not got a minor injuries unit you can go to? You don't usually have to wait that long to be seen at those.

I too had a mallet injury where the ligament ripped off taking a chunk of bone with it and dislocating the end of my finger. Had it yanked back into place and then splinted for 8 weeeks to let the ligament heal and although I have less movement in the end of that finger no pain or swelling so worth getting it checked.

urgh...I did this beginning of sept at our last attempt at jumping (jez failed to take off and I shot off and landed in a handstand position) All fingers on one hand swelled up straight away and was v painful. I didn't go to the docs, opted for self healing (bottle of wine)

3 months on and one finger is still swollen and a bit stiff and I can't hardly move it in the mornings so think I prob fractured something, but as others have said I'm fairly sure there isn't anything docs will do except strap it up, which would just be a nuisance. That said if you start losing any sensation tho get it checked out!
