Hi everyone, i will be keeping small bales of hay on a pallet and need to know what size tarp I would need, it will probably hold around 9-12bales or so I'm guessing. Any advice would be appreciated
I normally get two bales on a pallet, so stack them 5 levels to get 10 on (alternating).
You'll need a bigger tarp than you think you will, and may be better folding it in half, or tucking it under the bottom bales of hay. The hay may well 'sweat' underneath it too. I've found old horse rugs to be better, especially turnouts with some filling. They don't blow away as easily, and don't attract slug raves.
You'll need at least a 5m x 3m for a pallet of 10. (2m high, 1m across top, I'd use a 5 x 5). Make decent folds like wrapping paper corners OR pull tarp out and tie securely like an old fashioned tent, to allow air through.
Pop a tyre or 2 or old fence posts on the top before sheeting over so the tarp isn't resting directly on the hay.
I would suggest also putting some sort of covering on the ground below the pallets. Damp will still come up and affect the bottom bales otherwise. Also cover the pallets too. It was a hay merchant that told me to do this.
