How beautiful is this song and poem?!

My aged mare is at a friend's farm and is the best babysitter there is. At 26, and no longer rideable, she is an extremely valuable member of the little herd.

I'd love to hear more stories like mine and like the one in the song.

Our retired cob mare is worth her weight in gold. She did plenty for us when she was working, since then she has been a babysitter for those who dislike staying at home on their own, she has taken her turn at being a stable companion for a horse on box-rest, she has comforted the bereaved, she has been a shepherdess. She has also given us her fair share of worry, laughter and frustration. We wouldn't change a thing except the vet's view that her heart is not as good as it could be. She is 28.
 
I started to share Henri when he was 23 years old. That is, he was at least 23 years old, there was suspicion that he was older. He had been retired for a while, but was bored. So he came back to work and we hacked for miles together. He went anywhere, through anything, and was still fresh when we got home.
Our last hack was when he was 27 (at least!), and slowing down a bit. Oldie but goodie.

I've got a 28 yr old TB coming when the mud dries up a bit. He's not in a bad situation at the moment but he deserves more turnout and some pals, so I'm taking him on. I know he won't have much time left but he's earned a summer in my field. He can keep my 25 yr old company, and I bet they have lots of fun together. I can't wait!
