I was talking with a breeder recently about what type of mare their stallion crosses well with, and he used the phrase a bit or some "smart type". That was it, nothing else. No other concrete details.

I am unfamiliar with what a "smart type" mare or horse is.
Does anyone one else know? Does it have to do with the physical characteristics or a horse's state of mind?

Thank you ahead of time.

I've always understood it and used it as physical characteristics but hard to describe what exactly. sorry bit vague hopefully someone else could help a bit more.

we hear these descriptions all the time, I guess most folk have their own imagination therefore everyones opinion will differ I guess! For me a "Smart Horse" brings up the image of neat features - good head, neck good conformation all around, athletic with good tidy limbs, as appossed to a "Rangy Type" who might look more gangly but be a cracking scopy derby type horse.

The "Not Beautiful, but Useful type" - usually rangy & looks nothing until the rider on board! normally a shollow horse with great limbs, maybe a bit long it the back but a very supple individual that can really use himself!
