Hi All, just wondered what you all recommend for de-smelling the doglets breath. My Irish Setter stinks! She does need her teeth descaling, but she's just got the all clear from the vets (after 2 and half years) for menigitis:):):):) so she needs to wait a few months before being knocked out again.

Now there is the problem, a bone gave her bloat and a twisted stomack last year - another near death experience! And my other dogs gets the squits of them, so they're a no go. They are fed Burns dry food, but we have to wet down to try and prevent bloat again.

Good grief, bloat and torsion???? Poor girl - never heard of a bone doing that, she sounds almost as accident prone as my fella. Lucky she came through that.
Is she on medication? Could it be coming up from her stomach as opposed to her teeth?

Was it a cooked bone? I have never heard of a raw bone having this effect. Cooked bones are bad news and dangerous, cooking them makes them harder, more brittle and inclined to splinter. They will catch in the mouth, pierce intestines and set like concrete in the bowel.

Raw bones are totally different and have a lot of benefits.

PS rawhide can swell so if she suffers bloat it might not be the best solution, the bad breath could be a direct result of the diet. I have not fed my dogs any carbohydrates or cooked food for donkeys years so can't comment, but I remember someone on the forum saying certain dried food gave her dog bad breath?

our 7 yo gets raw beef bones once a week (on a sat after we've been to the butchers), a denta stick every-other day (too expensive to feed daily!!) and a raw-hide chew on a friday (the day she's home alone for the day) to keep her busy and her breath is really good :)

Tried to Edit but we are now only allowed 5 min apparently!!! So should say this please do not feed raw bones anywhere near kibble diets or cooked meat, they move at different speeds and can cause impaction and other nastys, if you give a bone allow several hours before you feed these types of food.

Hi Guys Thanks for all your replies. Due to major paranoier (spelt wrong!) I'm not doing bones, little lass is going through her nine lives too quick (she thinks she's a cat:) Ive heard raw hide chews can cause colitis so tend to via away from this too. They get denture rasks (pets at home - own brand - cheaper) and she loves her veggies:) I've got some stuff that goes in the water, so we'll try that. Ultimately she does need a descale - I am aware that her teeth arent brill, but a couple of month vet free first. She isnt on medication anymore, she has just come of cytiribine injections (chemo), low dose, to keep her immune system at bay (her menigitis was caused by an autoimmune reaction - doent know what causes it), so it may be that the bugs have taken a slight advantage. Now she's off, we'll see what happens.

As well as her teeth, impacted anal glands can give dogs bad breath - maybe get checked when next at vets. If you give them the huge raw cow hock/leg bones there is not really much they can actually break off - unless dog is part hyena!!!:) I'd avoid the raw hide chews as they can get stuck and swallowed to easily - we had a dog nearly choke to death with a raw hide chew that got stuck - only got it out when dog passed out!!
