Hi guys ive noticed in daphis right hand side rear hoof it is a bit smelly sometimes and also very ( chalky like) which sort of crumbles away... it is also the hoof i noticed she wasnt very keen on me picking out a few days ago! what does this sound like? do i need to get a vet out? thanks in advance Jordan.

Sounds like my lad. Probably a touch of thrush. Don't worry too much about the white sole that comes off, this happens. No need for the vet, I clean the foot up and then hold it up and fill the sole with hydrogen peroxide; hold it up for a few minutes and then put the foot down. I do it morning and evening. I'm sure there are more sophisticated treaments but this works ok for me.

ETA - You're right though, it's one of THOSE smells, like when the farrier comes and pares their feet!

Thanks chicomio! I,ll get some hydrogen peroxide and do like you do. I thought it might be something like thrush.

as for the smell like when the farrier comes....I dont know as i havent had a farrier out yet to her! ( shes new to me)

As I say, I'm sure someone on here will be able to provide a more 'modern' cure, but the HP will certainly do the trick. I use an old toothbrush to clean around the frog too as I don't have a hoof pick with a brush on it. Don't poke about too much with it if she doesn't want to hold her foot up for long. I'm lucky FB will stand there and lean on me with a foot up as long as I want him too.

There are many treatments for thrush and HP is a good one. Good old purple spray is something you can use to keep on top of it. Foot rot spray for sheep is great too.

Like i said there are many products and remedys to try some work better than others

Hoof and Sole will sort it, its a sort of safe disinfectant for the hoof, ive got a bottle which comes with a brush and has lasted for AGES! i think it was under a tenner. Its really hardened my horses feet

my vet gave me a receipe

1/3 of each...

hydrochloric acid.
acetone
formaldehyde (sorry for the spelling)

he said it was the strongest disinfectant he knew for feet,

BUT DO NOT GET IT ON SKIN yours or theirs as it will burn, & it stinks so keep your face away or your eyes will weep.

i dribble my mixture (in an old hair dye bottle) over the heel of frog and down the clefts on each side, allowing it to drip off the toe a bit, the sole goes white for a moment.

we can buy the ingredients over the counter here in france but in Uk you may get a few raised eyebrows, you will have to make sure you tell them it is defo not for any terrorist /criminal/dodgy activity.
bye

This recipe does not give concentrations for the formaldehyde or Hydrochloric acid.I would give this a very definate miss.
Stockholm tar is about as good as you canget for this problem. It also makes a very good hoofoil if you mix four parts vedgetable oil to one part stockholm tar.
