Hi, my horse keeps having a very smelly poo. It smells like human poo!
It is very strong and not very nice. Anyone got any ideas.
I haven`t changed her diet at all, but I have noticed that she has been drinking out of the puddles in the field. I first noticed it last Wednesday and it carried on for about 3 days, then seemed to go back to normal, and she just has the odd smelly one now, but the smell lingers.
She is having pasture mix with hi-fi, speedi-beet and propell plus and superflex. She has been on the propell for the last 6 months and the superflex for the past 3 months.
Thanks in advance.

Has she ever had laminitis? Is the dung not only smelly but also sticky? One of ours is a recovering laminitic and hasnt had a bout for nearly 3 years, but on wet grass/change of grazing he also suffers from this. I understand its due to changes in the hind gut (in our case due to the laminitis). If it persists I would take advice from your vet and nutritionalist.

thanks for your reply.
I have owned her for 4 years and she hasn`t had any laminitis in that time.
Yesterday she had normal poos with no smell and the same today. I will keep my `nose` open and I think that if it smells like that again, I will get the vet to check her over.
I have recently changed her hay but I shouldn`t think that it should have any effect.
thank you

Thanks Amymay, that is reassuring. I have never noticed it before though, it was very strong for 2 days..... but if you`ve had it too, (your horses) then it shouldn`t be anything serious. thanks

Tbh I've never given it any thought until your post today. But really, unless they are obviously unwell or have dihorea (sp) I certainly wouldn't be panicking.

best

superflex contains high levels of msm, which can cause really smelly poos! my old horse was on straight msm and no one would muck him out for me! coz msm is made of high levels of sulphur (rotten egg smell) it could be that?
