A 'dull but worthy' question: Does anyone have a smoke/fire alarm in their stable block that works well, i.e. doesn't go off randomly as dust wafts about or in foggy conditions? Or a heat detector which might be a better bet? Many thanks.

I have considered this many times. The thing that worried me was what happens if it goes off even genuinely with the horses in residence. Would there be total panic just at the noise? My only solution so far has been to put in a trip switch so that all power to the stables is isolated on the basis that a major cause of fire would be electricity.

I am looking forward to the answers you get. Are your stables at home/close to your house or a long way away? Where would you hear the alarm>

We had one at work, it covered the barns (where vehicles such as quad and tractor were stored) and the stables and tack rooms. The alarm did not sound in the yard area, but just in the house, and as it was not staffed at night it also called an alarm monitoring company.

It did occasionally go off when doing dusty chores, but generally it worked OK.

Watching this thread with great interest, I wondered recently if there were smoke alarms available that would trigger an alarm in the house if there was fire in the stables (stables are close to the house).

We had one at the college stables that spoke (i.e. "there is a fire, please evacuate, there is a fire, please evacuate"). They had regular fire drills and it didn't worry the horses at all. No idea where it came from or how expensive though.

We have them at the yard, when they were first installed they seemed abit problematic- dusty shavings and horses getting shod etc. They seem to have "de-sensitized themselves" sorry no idea on brand etc. Horses aren't bothered by it either :)

Stables are close to house but we have poor mobile signal so ideally need a wifi signal sent. Seems there's nothing like that though. So would settle for just a loud alarm that hopefully I would hear but it's the sensitivity problem that I'd like people's feedback on.

Any chance you can find out a name? Not easy I guess if no longer there :-(

Can you see any name on them or are they too high up?
