Last night I was mucking out, and F's owner C (understand lol?
wink.gif
)came up the stable to talk to me about something. I knew that she smoked, but last night she was smoking and when she was talking to me she flicked her ash on the floor - ok not actually in the stable but on the yard, but..................I was stood there

I was so mad I really couldn't quite believe it - I mean how could she be so irresponsible?? After I noticed that I have started to notice C a bit more (and her OH) and last night I went into the spare stable (where they STORE STRAW!!) and they were SMOKING IN THERE???? WTF????

Just writing this has made me even more mad!

She keeps 4 horses on a yard, but if this makes sense she has her own 'bit' round the other side of the yard. There is a 'YM' (if you can call her that, she basically just collects the money) and people just do their own thing, there are no 'rules' as such.

Surely 'No smoking' is a pretty basic rule though?

I do wonder

I never smoke in/right next to stables, my lot are kept in a field so no worry for me but if I go in the yard I keep to the edge before lighting up. Its too dangerous!

I think smoking and yards can mix - but with clear and obvious rules - not in or near stables/barns/muckheaps. Extinguish all cigarettes in water, etc.

We do have quite a high proportion of smokers at our yard, but we are all sensible.

Yes at my last yard where I used to ride everyone used to go down the other end of the yard, on the road, and they had a bucket of sand to put of cigs. Just amazes me that someone would smoke next to 10 bales of straw!!

I think you will find if your on a livery yard there should be no smoking signs up as it is illegal as its covered under the no smoking law etc ours is our yo had to put signs up in the barns and tackrooms etc

Surely thats just common sense isn't it! I smoke when im out riding too, but if im near dry grass or hedges I make sure the fags out before I throw it. I dont want to start fires all over the place!

I know! I mean if they want to smoke fair enough, but could they not do it in the stable??

Sorry I'm feeling fired up today *excuse the pun*

We are completely no smoking anywhere on our property... the one reason we ended up getting rid of all our liveries at our old yard was because they couldn't abide by the no smoking rule!!

One day one of our liveries came running in the house saying she had set fire to the muck heap accidently, she was having a crafty fag hidden behind the muck heap and she threw the butt on the heap and being summer and very dry the hay caught light and within minutes the whole heap was alight and out of control... It took 3 fire engines and a water bouzer to put it out and the land under the heap never recovered from all the water because we could never move the entire heap because the ground was too wet under the heap even in the height of summer for the tractors... they just used to sink into the ground!!
mad.gif

Then another livery smoked in her car in the carpark and threw the butt out the window and nearly set fire to my hay barn... we had a little grass fire that we manged to put out...
crazy.gif

and then we caught the teenagers smoking in the loft of one of the wooden barns!!! That was the last straw... so they were all asked to leave...
mad.gif

and whilst I am having a little rant... why do some people feel that when they walk onto a private property that has several (brand new) NO SMOKING signs... do they feel that this does not apply to them...
mad.gif

If they want to smoke in their home that's fine but don't do it in mine

Rant Over

Jen it does sound a little as if everything C is doing is winding you up at the moment? I agree she shouldn't be smoking near straw or stables, but I'm a bit worried about your relationship with her - if its that bad that you feel the need to pick up on her and rant on here all the time maybe it is time to find a different horse to share?
crazy.gif

Sorry, I don't mean to be a b8tch but it can't be nice for you feeling like that all the time? I know how it feels to disagree with the owner on a lot of things, and honestly, there are other horses and owners out there who could be a lot more aligned to your point of view?

I know all too well that when you're a sharer or loaner its all about compromise because its not your horse and somebody else has final say, there must be very few sharer/owner combinations that agree with each other over everything (and in that case maybe one is learning from the other), but if you can't agree or agree to disagree and let her get on with it about issues that matter a lot to you both then maybe it is time to re-evaluate and go your seperate ways.

Smoking near straw and endangering her own horses' life as a result is a pretty big thing to me.

"My" F's owner smokes but never in such silly situations.

I smoke on the yard, however I do not smoke in stables, in barns or anywhere near hay or straw or anything flamable. And I always extinguish my fag in water (a puddle or under the tap).

as HG said - fires do happen and I've had a horse killed in an arson so I know first hand the results

to me there are never any bonfires let alone any smoking anywhere on the property. rubbish goes to the tip or in a skip

tbh if I was somewhere that people smoked and there were wooden buildings I'd move my horses immediately as otherwise I'd worry every night whether they were being burned in a fire

I smoke on the yard as does one of our liveries. Though i've been really good last few weeks and not done so!

Always make sure i put them out in a puddle/water bucket though... after almost setting fire to a wheelbarrow last summer... when there wasn't any puddles!

there are three of us on the yard I am at YO, me & another lad we all smoke and smoke on the yard but responsibly..We are all over 30 so know the perils of where to smoke and where not to

WE all smoke at my yard but only in the tack room. there are no rules about it but we all have the common sense that sparks + hay/straw = fire. Smoking near anything flamable is just irresponsible.

I smoke but only near arena or in the house (yard at home anyway) on old yard we had to be outside but people did smoke in the haybarn when it was raining
crazy.gif

Our yard is completely non-smoking and tbh I would be livid if anyone tried to smoke near it. There are signs up everywhere; as a riding school the main yard has to comply with the new regulations but even on our separate DIY yard we have put signs up too. Didn't stop a builder working on YO's house yesterday, he stepped outside for a crafty fag... standing outside our wooden hay barn full of dry hay, with a huge 'NO SMOKING' sign over his head :/ I asked him politely to move elsewhere.

Like Reynold I would not keep my horses anywhere where it was okay to routinely smoke.

I smoke and a couple of others do as well. We are sensible with it though, never in the stable blocks or near the hay/straw barn, its just common sense isnt it?

YO however, always has a cig hanging out of his mouth and walks around the hole yard with it, encluding in the stable blocks. What can you say though to the YO???
frown.gif

there are a lot of smokers on our yard but we follow simply rules.

no smokin in the stables or anywhere that has a roof.
all cig have to be died out in water and put in the smoking bucket.
you can smoke in the outdoor arena as long as it is died out and put in the bin there
