My cob has been diagnosed as a low grade laminitic. (LGL) and has had his diet /management revolutionised with much sucess very quickly.

However as he is a foodie, he gets through is soaked double netted hay very quickly and before the diagnosis would spend a couple of hours per night knocking his Snack-a-ball around to get his evening feed of pony nuts out of it.

Now he is on a 100% forage diet with only a balancer, (which is working great). I just wondered if there was anything SAFE I could put in his ball to help keep him occupied.

I get oat feed pellets made by Rowan Barbary. No oats in them as such, just the husk that is removed when the oats are milled. They are pretty much chaff made into a cube, they look like pony nuts but are even lower MJDE, the ponies seem to like them :) Or some of the High Fibre cubes are fairly low too.

Just found out Pumpkin seeds (1x small handful per day) are ok for this job, and are high in magnesium, low in sugar. which is what you need for bare footers.

I personally wouldnt put balancer in a ball unless you have no bedding in the stable. Otherwise the small pellets will get lost in the bedding- a total waste of money. badminton fibre nuggets are very good, they are very low in starch and sugar. Any fibre nut would be fine if it is low in starch and sugar
