Our pony has a loose ring french link snaffle. It's what he came with. He goes well in it. He's not strong - very soft mouthed. The lightest touch brings him to a halt.

So what's the difference between a french link and an eggbutt snaffle? (yes I know one has a link in the middle and the other doesn't! LOL!) Is one more gentle than the other?

Also what difference do loose rings make?

Just curious really - as he came with the french link and I've never changed it or thought about why he might have it.

Thanks

The french link doesn't have the nutcracker action of a single jointed snaffle. There is a lot more movement with a french link mouthpiece, so some horses that may get "set" in a single jointed snaffle, but may be lighter and lean on the bit less in the french link. Loose rings can pinch the sides of the mouth if they don't have rubber rings, whilst eggbutts won't pinch the side of the mouth. Hope that explains what you're asking about
