One of our mares prefers a loose ring, and the other prefers an eggbutt. I have no preference either way - so long as they are comfy and feel like working then I'm happy!

Horse prefers an eggbut for flat work as he is much happier in a contact. But he has a loose ring for jumping so he finds it harder to fix against me.
Personally I dont mind what he has as long as he is happy.

Depends on the horse. Mine seems to prefer an eggbutt, but for many the extra movement in a loose ring is helpful. Agree that full cheeks are worth considering too, that was going to be my next trial for my mare!

Eggbutt on our TB and my daughter's pony and a full cheek on our loan pony as she's younger and was initially broken to drive - so she needs the extra help of a full cheek with sideways movements...

We use the snaffles with the extra link in the middle...

I know it's going to be a bit "trial and error" to find one that works best for my boy but he's been ridden in a loose ring and an eggbutt, both just jointed but i'd like to try a french link to see how he gets on with it and I think I would prefer it if he would take to an eggbutt just because then I wouldn't have to worry about pinching  I know that if a loose ring is fitted properly that shouldn't really be a problem but as it's still early stages for us both I'd like to go with better safe than sorry :D

We started out with a loose ring french link but she became fussy in her mouth and rather than use a flash strap I tried an eggbutt french link.

That lasted 10 minutes as she hated it, took hold of it and was a general pain to ride in it so we then tried the hanging cheek french link which she likes much better and we still use it :)

My eggbut has a losenge that has a rotating centre and my horse is happiest in this. The loose ring we used to use was a french link and current one for jumping is double jointed with little copper rollers arround the central link so almost a french link with a diffrence.

Previous horse went best in a loose ring as he fixed his neck and leant on my hand. Current horse prefers an Eggbut and takes up a better contact with this....he was behind the bit in a loose ring.

I like the Jeffries 'revolver' lozenge....it has a split 'bullet' in the middle and each half swivels independently.

I use both types for example my raising 6yo TB has a happy mouth an eggbutt neue schule for flat work and jumping in the school and show jumping he uses a loose ring for hunting and fast work. I always keep one bit for exciting stuff and swop and change snaffles for everything else I think it keeps there mouths sensitive . However if I have a horse with a difficult mouth I tend to change less after I have found something that suits them.

I normally use a loose-ring french link but the current horse (Arab) didn't seem to like it so after seeing a thread on here about horses with fleshy tongues (which she has) I got her a Neue Schule Verbinden and she is very happy in that but it's still basically a loose-ring french link

I think loose ring is harder for the horse to lean on, but Eggbut is better for young horses as can't slide through their mouth should they try and resist the bit and also offers a more consistent feel.

I ride my cob in a loose ring at times but mainly use the Rockin S ported Snaffle which is my favourite bit, it sits so quietly and comfortably in his mouth and he is so light in it, and the cheek pieces offer him more guidance when he needs it too! He is only young so needs me to 'be there' for him sometimes which the Rockin S really helps with!

Do you not think that it is the size of the bit rings that affects a bit being pulled through a horse's mouth; I have seen it happen just as much with eggbutts as looserings? I would always rather use a full cheek snaffle for this reason :)

All of ours have loose ring French link snaffles, including 16.2 WB,the section D and the Arab, and seem very comfortable with them. The WB has the Nue Schule version which he has in all disciplines.I believe "less is more" and hate to see horses overbitted. The simpler the better.

My boy wears a loose ring with a french link in the middle. I found that he tried to lean on the eggbutt rings so I changed to a loose ring which he goes very well in. I always use Snaffles with a french link in the middle to avoid the 'nut cracker' action caused by the single jointed ones.

I use hanging cheek but before that was loose ring (french link).

Never found any difference really with eggbut or loose ring to ride in but from a vanity POV prefer the look of a loose ring.

I have a lozenge link, my mare seemed happier than she did in a French link. Would also consider the shaped single joint bits. My next choices were going to be a full cheek lozenge snaffle or a demi anky type of thing. Trial and error will get you there in the end!

Yes I guess that is true!
I think if you have a horse that is likely to resist the bit to turn/bend then full cheek is a much better option!
