When you are out walking on the leash with your dog what is an acceptable level of stopping to sniff? My girl will literally stop every 10 feet if I let her. I don't mind every so often but should I be making her walk past most of the time?

Oo, interesting one. My dog is rarely on a lead, but if she is I allow the odd bit of sniffing only (but that's only because I know that shortly she'll be off lead and can sniff to her hearts content).

mine aren't allowed more than 1 or 2 sniffs when on the lead as they get plenty of sniffing time off lead. if I cant let them off(which is rare) then I am more lenient, mine are girls too...

I let them sniff as much as they want. Might take more time out of my life, but i liken it to us sitting on facebook for an hour. Whats the harm.

On lead, walking or bike, must walk smartly at whatever pace I decide. Offlead, can certainly sniff and do dog stuff, but must come when called.
Dogs do most of their thinking through their nose so it's unfair to expect them not to use it! Certain breeds are worse offenders too.

On a short lead, no sniffing or stopping. On a longer lead, ok but move when I ask and preferably before I am brought to a grinding halt. Off lead, as much sniffing and stopping as they wish. Walking three dogs at the same time, if I allowed them all to stop whenever they fancy, we would barely be moving at all. The less time it takes to get to a safe place to be off lead, the longer they can run free!

If it's a lead only walk-rare and only if injured, then it's their walk, they can sniff as much as they like within reason. Otherwise, it's walk to park/field etc, let them off, big dog does as he pleases, other two are constantly trained so not much sniffing allowed, except to find the dummy/ball.

Because I can't let Laska off lead we have sniff and bug/mole hunt walks and quick march walks. The sniff walks are on a long line and she does as she pleases, the march walks she has an occasional sniff but getting most of her head down mole holes isn't allowed!

Never when on the lead. My dogs have recreational fun walks aplenty to sniff and play. When on the lead they walk by my side. I couldn't cope if they pulled away to sniff.
I realise that if a dog had to be on the lead the whole while they would need a chance to relax and sniff as posted above.

mine only really come into contact with other dogs at work-so they are allowed to sniff around within reason. Both walk very well on their leads when expected/requested. The rest of the time they are sniffing after rabbits and badgers and off lead.
