Sniffle....going to have to get rid of the pony

Hi all.

Well, a quick run down. Pony, slightly crazy but fun, bought her as a 4 year old, two years later got bone spavin and had surgery to fuse the hocks....then went on loan for a year, and now I have her back.

Now, I have gotten into Graduate School in America. I was really hoping that I could persuade my mum to ship her, but really, it costs too much, and its not as if I could breed from her to make back the money.

So, dilemma. She is sound, but won't pass a flexion test, therefore won't 'pass' a vetting. Do I
-put her out on permanent loan in the hope that they don't sell her on for meat etc, or worse still tell me they don't want her when I am 4000 miles away
- Give her away
- Sell her for not very much (probably as she is so good, about 2.5k, but maybe less) with full wardrobe and hope to recoup some losses?

I really don't know. I can't take her to the States, and it is silly to keep putting off the inevitable. I have a month until my finals and really don't have the will to get myself all wound up about yet another thing.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. I really thought my mum might pay, but its silly money, and I can't get 5k in 4 months to ship her.

huge beyond massive hugs headed your way, that is such a tough decision to make.

Personally I would try to loan her out and ask someone you trust to keep an eye on her and keep you posted.
 
Oh no how sad, do you not have any good friends that would take her on? God this must be so hard for you, how long will you be gone? wouldn't you want her back when you come home?

That is probably what I am going to try to do. I think though that I will have to find an adult midget as she is only 14.2hh, and although she would make a lovely PC pony, kids grow and ponies don't!

I suppose if I put her on loan, if I ever came back I could take her back, or maybe somehow make up the 5k working part time in the States! (wishful thinking!)
 
Unbeknown to you all, I am actually a 'Yank', and therefore once I am gone, I may love it too much, never to return!

Yes, will have to start asking around. Need to get her schooled up so she doesn't act like a complete toss pot when someone gets on her. See, I don't mind her acting like an ass, but others might!

Shipping to the States is not cheap - she would have to probably go to Amsterdam, then to NY where she would be in quarantine for 21days (CEM) and then shipped 500 miles south. It costs quite a bit..... (then there is the insurance too!)...really, for a 'pikey' pony as my mum calls her, its a bit steep!
 
Oh right. My mate is 5ft 8 and she rides a 14.2hh and she looks fine on him, maybe a competetive teenager? Or maybe the ILPH or something.

Nope, we are in SE London!

The thing is with the ILPH, I would just feel bad giving the pony to charity, I am sure it is fine, but I wouldn't want her to take up the space of another horse that was being mistreated. Will look into it now though...
 
I'm sure you will find a nice home - as someone said above doesn't need to be a midget, 2 of my friends at the yard and I are all about 5'5 or a bit taller and have horses around 15hh or under! And all in our 20s, so that is the sort of home you need for her probably? A RC home? Maybe someone on here would be interested. If you did loan with a possible view to buy if you do end up staying in the states that would cover all options. I had my horse on loan and eventually bought him, so there are genuine people out there looking for nce if slightly nutty horses on loan!!

To tell you the truth, I just want someone over 18! I need an adult, as I worry that a competitive teenager would outgrow her and get bored. I think loan with view to buy may be a good idea, thanks

there are always plenty of people looking for a good horse to take on loan (me inc.).... so maybe if you chose to loan her out you could 'vet' the prospective homes and then feel better about leaving her?

i know its hard i had to sell on my first pony and it broke my heart.

congratulations for getting into graduate school though!

I'm sure you could find an adult to loan her her, I'm 5'7 and ride ponies as small as 13hh sometimes! Know quite a few adults who prefer ponies to horses actually

That is obviously because ponies are better than horses!! I much prefer ponies, always have. Maybe because I am short, but I have always thought that they were much more fun!
 
Hehe, I will have to flip a hell of a lot of burgers! I figure though, its 2 1/2years for the course, she will be 11. Then, 2 years of saving, she will be 13, I can take her, piddle around for 7 years and retire her in the 'Deep South' so she can sweat it out!

I'm just gutted its happened to you now and not one year on when I'd be finished with uni and not so skint... I've grown quite fond of Alice these past few days!!

If you need any help when your doing your finals, even when I'm back down in Southampton, I'll be back home every so often so just give me a shout, and if you haven't found anywhere suitable (which I'm sure you will have) by mid June I've got a whole 3 months back here if you need me to help with anything at all. Or if you did find somewhere for her to go and wanted me to keep an eye on things, I'll be around
