I've recently had two newbies come in, one a livery and one is a clients horse I am bringing on.

The livery has come from a mixed herd and has most likely bought ringworm with her as well, and the clients horse came from a dealer/producer.

Livery showed signs of wiping her nose in the dirt when she first came, clients horse nothing for the first few days, they yesterday and today white/clear thick discharge from one nostril, leaving crusty old snot. Not all the time, I'd say about twice a day it happens.

Horses are both in field together, so no idea who bought it in. I felt what could be a small swelling under the ones chin, but then again could just be how she is.

Is this likely to be strangles? They have been in contact with others over the fence before I noticed the discharge, but are now away from them.

Bloody horses. Nightmare.

Take their temperature several times over the next couple of days . Treat them as infectous and keep them isolated and ensure anyone who handles them cleans up and disinfects anything that has been near them.

If the snot changes colour or the lump under the throat gets bigger it may just be one of those autumn colds.

If either of them has a raised temperature then call the vet straight away. In the meantime, keep nostrils clean - baby wipes are great and apply a little zinc ointment below the nostrils to protect the skin. If they are rubbing the snot onto their legs then wipe some baby oil down the legs so the snot doesn't glue itself to the skin

The other thing to consider is that possibly the one with the snotty nose has a sinus infection.

For the possible ringworm horse a bath with Nizoral will sort that out fast.
