Snotters?!

Hi,

This morning when I went up to stables, outside every box (3) there looked like a big yellow snotter!

Only one of them has been coughing, so I started soaking her hay and it seems to be improving, and there is no discharge around their nostrils that would lead me to believe anything was wrong. And it seems a bit weird that there was one outside each of the stables?

Any ideas?

Not to alarm but perhaps check for strangles?

I used to find a cream coloured, rubbery glue like consistency outside my stable. Never saw horse coughing, only when first going up in to trot when ridden he'd clear his throat. Dismissed gunk a few times as wasn't sure it was coming from him then saw it splattered on inside of stable door. Vet diagnosed COPD, not saying this is what yours has but do keep an eye on it but if all 3 have it I would be very suspicious and get it checked out.

Henry occasionally produced a lovely gob of snot when I wasn't there (and also used to cough going into trot when ridden!). I was soaking his hay but even this isn't enough, now. I bought a massive load of dry haylage last year and have moved onto it early. It's not worth the risk. He never had residue around his nostrils, either. I would try a different hay source/haylage for a week if you can and see if it changes anything.

White snot usually copd related, just stabled for too long due to weather. Yellow greeny unilateral one nostril sinus related, something stuck in the nose, or tooth root, get vet. Yellow greeny bilateral both nostrils respiratory related and or strangles, there is no coughing with strangles. Usually 5 days ab's and snots are cleared, copd snots need turn out or use something like vaseline to dstop dust pores going up the nose as the vaseline will collect them. Remember keep eye discharge clear as well.
