Hi,

I have had my first loan horse for about 6 weeks. This morning I noticed he has a very snotty nose, a lot of watery discharge from both nostrils, it is dripping out and he is snorting quite often. His breathing was a little strained as brought him in (up a slight hill). His temp was 37.7C, i tried to count his breating but he kept moving so that didn't work well but his breathing wasn't rapid or shallow, some breaths were fairly deep but not all.

He is out 24/7 with 3 others, I figured it was too late to isolate him from them but their field is separate to all the other horses. I plan to give him a few days off and keep an eye on him and i have told the owners of the others in the field to keep an eye on them.

I'm thinking maybe it is just a virus? Any reassurance or advice appreciated as he is my first horse all of my own!

My gelding has EXACTLY the same thing last week.

I spoke to the vet who said if the discharge is clear and free running (ie not gungey, yellow etc) then it should be anything to worry about.

I put my lad on bute for two days anyway and he is much better, although his nose hasnt stopped running, but i have stopped worrying! ;)

Wouldnt worry. Mine got cold the other day and had a snotty nose. Also they can get a snotty nose the day after hard work. My friends mare regularly gets snotty noses. Aslong as its not seriously thick and your horse isnt looking dull you should be ok
