Before you say "Get the Vet", they are coming tomorrow to do flu and tet for this horses, but bit of advice, one of my girls came in last night with a snotty nose, it was yellowish, but she is happy in herself, warm and polished her breakfast off and tea yesterday and breakfast today, my other three horses all seem fine. She has no cough and breathing is fine, cleaned her nose last night, but within 10 minutes it was dirty again....... Any ideas folks, she not unhappy, depressed or anything like that, she is her normal self....

creeps out of the room again.

Is her temp normal? If she is eating, drinking etc and seems bright enough I would personally give her a few days off, keep her warm and keep a close eye on her - and the others - animals like us do pick up virus's

Everything is normal, that is what I can't weigh up.......... Bless her, she hates having a nose cleaned...... Nothing else on the yard is showing the signs, but I'm waiting for it. Only thing I can put it down to is that when we hunted a few week ago she got really wet and cold and also YO came out on her new horse, which she had only had a week, they went on the same lorry, so hoping that it wasn't anything from that and that it has just decided to show it's face........ I'm sure the vet will sort her tomorrow if she is still the same...........bless her....

Give her some garlic granules in her food. Great for clearing up viral infections. It's quite common at this time of year for horses to get snotty. So long as temp is OK, eating and drinking fine then no need to panic just yet. If still showing symptoms in 3-4 days then may need to ask vet.

I would be very carefull as it could be strangles. Some horses only have a snotty nose and don't show any other symptoms. The only way to know is for the vet to do a swab. This is not scaremongering as this happened to me a few years ago.

My girl used to get a thick, yellow snotty nose. Had vet out who said it was a dust allergy. I give her a 2 scoops of NAF easy breathe and she has been ok since.

Had a pony number of years ago with strangles, this one is showing no similar signs of it, but will keep an eye on her until tomorrow when vet comes.........

Must admit when mine had strangles early in the year, the only sign he had was a snotty nose. Everything else on the yard had temperatures go through the roof and a few had problems with absesses round their glands but mine didnt.

Dont think you can ever rule out strangles given how common it is (still seems to have a stigma attached to it though) but equally theres a hell of a lot of other things it could be.

Im sure the vet will shed some light on it

Agree, although I have had snotty nose signs and it not be strangles as well. One of my horses got the abscess and was very ill, one got a very sore throat, one got just a snotty nose and wasn't even off colour and one didn't get any symptoms at all........

You can only wait it out, but be honest about it and please don't mingle while your horse is snotty. The pony which infected mine didn't pull through and I nearly lost one of mine.

There appears to be a virus going round in the Kent area which apparantly is not Strangles but has very similar symptons........ not sure if it's just the vets being cautious..

OMG I lost a beautiful arab 25 years ago through strangles, it was the most horrific thing I have ever seen a horse go through. He had absesses under his throat that burst open, they were filled with green puss. (sorry hope no one eating their supper) He had a very runny nose and sore throat. We had 5 horses in the stables that were all well and healthy, we had a new one arrive, within 1 week, all the others went down with this nasty nasty virus. We actually lost 2 horses that week, it was just the worst time. I do hope your horse hasnt got strangles, even the horses that surived were very poorly for some time, almost depressed for weeks, a little like ME in humans. I will be thinking of you, please keep us updated.
