Snotty nose

Hi all, my 25 year old mare has a nasty yellow smelly discharge from one nostril, she does get a bit snotty after excersice sometimes, but it's never been smelly before. She was like this when i brought her in from the field, not after excersice. She seems ok in herself, although a little quiet. She has been diagnosed with cushins. Has anyone else's horse had this problem? Thanks
 
Hmmm, this often happens with older horses IME, especially Cushings as their immune system is compromised, however, you need to ask yourself has she been in contact with any other horses recently? If so, where have those horses been? (you know what I'm gonna say ..... has there been any strangles outbreaks where those horses have been?)

Is it in one nostril, or both? Is it runny or smelly? Is it (yucky subject) yellow?

In the first instance, I'd suspect sinus or even tooth trouble. It might be worth getting an equine dentist to do a check just to see if teeth are OK, and/or the vet to have a look as she might need a sinus drain. If its just one nostril, I'd suspect teeth or blocked sinus. Is she shaking her head? Sensitive to touch? Sorry lots of questions. But whatever, bearing in mind her age, I'd be inclined to get the vet out to have a look.
 
I agree, get the vet.

Have you taken her temperature? If high this could indicate strangles or other infection.

Hiya, it's yellow and smelly! just from one nostril. She hasn't been in contact with any other horses so don't think it could be strangles, all other horses on yard seem fine. however some cows have been brought onto the yard, again i don't think there would be any contact, but the stress may have brought on an infection?? I've called the vet, but she doesn't want to see her till tomorrow, as it's not an emergency!

I hope thats all it is, i've got some antibiotics but the vet said to hold off until she is satisfied it's not strangles, although she's had no contact with other horses so i can't see how it could be.
 
Once th vet's been and it's established if it inot anything terribly serious - maybe think about getting some neem leaf from Cotswold herbs and feeding two heaped tablespoons twice a day in the feed. It was very effective in clearing this up for one of our ponies and it's easy on their digestive system. Took about five days to clear.
 
Thanks everyone, I've had her in isolation from the first sign she was unwell. The vet came to see her monday morning, she's on 10 day course of antibiotics. And had a nasal swob(which resulted in me being thrown the stable) results due back 6-10 days. She is much improved now, hardly any discharge now and she's much brighter!!
