Bit worried tonight as 3 of mine have snotty noses.. 2 are like yellow/light green and my 2 yr old has black sticky discharge and a cough. Not wanting my foals to catch it.. should i get vet out straight away or keep an eye on it for next few days. They all are still there usual selves and have there usual appetites. What to do :/

My gelding gets something like that now and again - snotty nose, but in fantastic form otherwise. He had it a few weeks back, he came in on Sunday with a runny nose, not dirty, and he was in good form, so didn't worry about it. Rode him on the Wednesday after a couple of days off with no further runny nose/snot, and he was in flying form, but when I was finished he snorted out some creamy/yellow snot. Arranged with YO to get vet out for a look the next morning. The following day the discharge was worse, but he was still in great form and looking for food. Vet gave him a shot, which cleared it up.

I would say see how they are in the morning, if they're still snotty get the vet. That said, I'd be inclined to get the vet for the 2yo if snotty and coughing, or if things seem to have improved in the morning, ring for advice.

I would do temps, isolate all affected indidivuals and when caring for the horses do the healthy ones first then the sick ones and make sure you change clothes/wash hands after looking after affected horses.

If the temps are raised or they don't seem themselves at all then get the vet. If they're ok in themselves with no temps then I'd be tempted to watch for a day or two but if they get worse or no improvement within about 24-48 hours get the vet.

There's no temps and horses are all there usual selves, the snot is very minimal but still there. I'm going to see what there like in the morning and decide if to ring vet or not

sounds like a good plan - if nothing else you can have a chat with the vet and see what they say. but I'd try and isolate them as well especially from any foals as they will be worse affected by any bugs

snotty nose is one of the symptoms of this herpes virus.

Snotty nose is a symptom of many things though, from a chill / cold to strangles, or even a dust allergy. Mine got snotty when i changed hay, started soaking it and a week later it had gone.

If all 3 have come down with it and no changes i would pribobably have the vet out. I called them about mine and the vet advised me that if it didnt get worse and they were not showing other symptoms it should be anything nasty, but they would come out if still there a week later or if others got it
