This is a non horsey post and for that i am sorry!!!!!

I just wanted to extend a thread that started out on another forum, and is wothy of a mention here!!

If you are able to navigate the snow and you know of someone who may not be so fortunate, and >IF< you are able to,,, please offer a helping hand or a visit or both(elderly neighbors/disabled)! Some may love the snow and some really cannot cope with prolonged periods of it!!!

many thanx for reading (sorry its not horsey)

What a nice post!

And it *can* be horsey too of course.

I was helped out by a farrier (not mine) driving his 4x4 over the snow in the middle of our lane last year. With everyone in off-road-vehicles the tracks were so deep my ancient saloon was having real trouble.

Season of goodwill and all that :-)

Aw, how nice! I literally phoned the elderly lady who owns my fields 5 minutes ago, to see what I could take her after work. A young (compared to her!) man answered. Turned out to be Brian from the village and he's beaten me to it, taking her soup and fixing her kitchen!

Next stop, the neighbours... :)

I rang the neigbours this morn when they hadn't appeared by 8 (they're normaly up by then) and offered to go get their shopping for them, but even tho they are both in their 80's they wouldn't hear of it but were very pleased that we'd thought of them.

Last year i was an angel. I took lots of old ladies shopping in my 4x4 . they all climbed in and didnt evan knock the snow of their feet. On one day i did 4 saupermarket runs which is not good as we live in the sticks. I also ferried a new fellow livery to and from the stables and on the one day i didnt i did her horses for her.... a nightmare as she is a straw waist deep type. /the only one who offered me any fuel money was the livery... who turned into a nasty two faced cow as soon as the snow thawed. My car ended up stinking and we never did get rid of the smell.
this year ive got a new toy and its brilliant. it doesnt smell and its not going to. I have checked on the old couple two doors down and brought them shopping but no one .... and i mean no one is getting in my car. sorry. this year i am a bitch.

LOL, and I don't blame you! Just want to say thanks to my wonderful daughters, who, whilst I was sat at home with the 4x4 but too ill to drag myself out, walked several miles in very deep snow to the stables to feed and water the poultry and hay the ponies and horses, are still there after several hours filling haynets and dragging them out into the fields - and one of them isn't even horsey!

I am a reablement carer for the elderly.

Where i live we have at least 3 foot snow,i dont work in my village,i work about 5 miles from home.

I recieved a phone call today, that none of the carers could get to my village, and could i pick up the calls, which i did.

I have to say they was sooooooooo grateful to see me and praising me for walking to help them.

I am from tomorrow on my 4 days off but reassured them i will be there for them.

I helped out last year - and will again if required - I took papers and basic groceries to my parents neighbours by horseback. The neighbours allowed me to ride through their fields to take exercise the horses in return for this. worked out well for everyone!

Im busy have a family/business/two horses i still clear old neighbours path everyday as shes by herself it dosnt take long i havent today because my shovel has been snowed over and i cant find it !But id help anyone if i can

Good thinking, I think we need to help out each other more often. There's an oldboy across the road from me so will check he doesn't need anything fetching tomorrow. Asked a couple of times last winter as well, but he's too polite and always says he's ok. At least he knows he can pop over and ask if he changes his mind.

God if we cleared our elderly neighbour's front for him he'd kill us! He loves doing it, it is his favourite thing ever, in fact he does the fronts of the young couple next door to him, and the family the otherside.

And his classic morris minor is better in the snow than most of the neighbours cars.....

My sister and I went to the supermarket in Land rover, we asked our neighbour if she wanted anything, I was actually meaning essential stuff bread milk etc. She replied err can you get me some coconut!! WTF, she proceeded to tell us she HAD to bake a cake!!
Last night it was a blizzard here roads grid locked, my BiL got a tractor from his work (brand new un registered) towed no end of people in cars they all gave in a tenner here and there, also towed a school bus full of stranded kids. Then he went to see if my sister was ok at work she was on lates in petrol station (Morrisons) a man came in- in a panic asked BiL is that your tractor Iam totally stuck, 2 miles away and had walked to petrol station, BiL rescued him and he gave him£30.
Then an artic Morrsons delivery lorry jack knifed across the road, again trusty BiL and tractor pulled him out of the way, so now we will see if Morrisons give him anything, not that money is the poiint its the principle if Morrisons had to get a recovery truck it would of cost a mint. Bet he doesnt so much as get a thank you or a box of chocolates!!
Mind you my sister will go on and on to manager he will give her somthing to shut her up- not a good company to work for.

Praps only offer help if it is really needed some ' good turns' are not,,, errrm too well recieved by the elderly' bless!!!

blimey he sounds fitter than me!!!!!! fairplay that morris minor!!!!

ok i relented... i was going to dentist and the old bloke down the road cadged a lift to do some shopping. Love him to bits and if i hadnt got him out of the house he would have murdered his missus, anyways i jumped out of the car to run an errand leaving him all cosy with heaters on and heated seats. when i got back in he had had a smoke ... in my car. AArgh i gave up six weeks ago and now my car smells like an ash tray. Trouble is he is such a dude i cant give him wrong or not like him!

just shows how truely kind you are and well done on giving up smoking!!! i hope you realise how smelly and horrid it was and why u gave up!!!

I remember listening to radio when the bad weather was with us earlier this year - it was an elderly lady who had just lost her husband of many many years - someone had got up early in morning and cleared her drive and all her paths of snow and left a bag of food on the step - the lady was crying as she told this and she doesnt even know who it was - a simple act of kindness for a lady who was so so sad . Neighbours round my mum - 78 - keep and eye out for her and help her get supplies - to them i say thank you from my heart - i live some way away

I stopped at a yard just up the road from my house on sunday, and offered to do their horses (6 of them) in the morning if the couldn't get there. Only feed and water obviously, not mucking out (I do have my own to do, and a full time job!). They didn't call me, but the offer was there - I'll cry if she calls tomorrow morning, as its my morning off doing the horses :D

I did however see a police van having trouble pulling away at a traffic light today though, and didn't even offer to help - well H&S and all that :p ;)

i peeled lots of old people off the floor it that counts :-/ luckily the small amount of help i gave my mum at the home she manages helped me in knowing abit about manual handling and how to get them off the floor. Why they still attempt to get the morning paper in this weather il never know! my nan lives at the top of a very steep hill so me and mum walked up with some shopping for her but shes gone to tenerife early this year for the winter. alright for some isnt it!

It has been great reading how the Dunkirk spirit is still alive and kicking on here BUT I remember last year listening to a radio talk show (LBC I think it was)where people were saying that you shouldn't clear anyone's drive since if they slipped due to you not doing it properly you would be liable to be sued.

I was in the car screaming at the radio and raging at the 'sue every b*gger for absolutely anything' culture. You would not believe how many people called in saying that they wouldn't 'dare' clear a drive for a neighbour for that very reason. Makes me sick.

I'd help out all day long if I could and boo sucks to those who won't. God forbid they should ever be in need themselves.

Rah, sorry rant over.

Loads of people were on about this last year, interestingly I heard on the radio that this was not actually the case. Maybe someone of a legal persuasion on here will know. I thought it was deeply stupid:mad:

Ah, glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking along those lines Berpisc.

If it really isn't the case then fabulous. I hope all the 'Oh I would't dares' had a bit of a rethink. The cynic in me thinks probably not sadly.

I'd be happy to help but I moved quite recently and don't really know anyone here who needs help. But I am trying to be nice he he and have been shoveling a whole lot of snow from the drive we share with neighbours
