I use the turnout hood which is just the head, used a full neck one before, not made by snuggy hoods and had mane rubbed off. But still have mane rubbed off with the head.
But for keeping them clean the head is brilliant and imo seems safer as if they try and get it off, like b****r, it isnt attched anywhere and just comes off cleanly. My mare got hers off a few times but my YO used them on both of her hunter and neither got them off...
As for durability, my mare 'lost' hers in the field before the snow and it stayed there for over 2 months and when i finally found it, it still looks new!!!
With regards to the mane being rubbed I still havent found a solution.
I use the snuggy hood turnout with ears on (mud monster grey mare makes it necessary!). Def leaves her with more mane, still a bit rubbed out, but due to sweet itch she is rugged year round so I think this is pretty unavoidable. Fantastic hoods though, hers really gets put through the mill and still looks brand new, much more £ than other makes but worth it I think (we have a cheapy one for in the stable to save pennies!).
I had a really bad experience with one. Had it for Oshk as he is a mucky pup, it came over his eyes- luckily poor sod was too scared to move, but took me ages to be able to get near him to get it off, and he was drenched in sweat.
Another forum member on here actually lost her horse after one slipped over his eyes and he paniced.
They are fabtastic, my horse always comes in with cuts over his face where he has been eating out the hedge and his hood never gets ripped! He never has got it off and it never rubbed his mane, but if you just want ine to prevent mane rub you'd be better off with a lycra one as they are cheaper, the turnout ones are realy durable though.
Was that one of the snuggy hood ones R? I've always been very cautious about anything that can cover their faces, butb thought the SH ones were pretty good... thanks though, will avoid most probably
The necks on the snuggy hood are pretty long, so I can see how that could happen - I have put darts in mine to shorten it and make it nice and secure. Snuggy hoods will alter the hood for you if the fit isn't quite perfect.
My horse is rarely without his during the winter. His mane does get rubbed out by feb, but he also wears a combo, so not sure despite extensive tests which is doing the damage - probably both! He doesn't wear the SH under the combo as this is almost certain to rub it.
I've used it for 3 winters & never had a problem with it slipping. They make it in loads of sizes, so make sure it fits.
I have one for my girl, and found it really useful when she was turned out over the winter. It definitely helped stop her rugs rubbing her mane out, and the cleanliness is amazing - the hood itself is also so easy to wash. I will also say that Snuggy Hoods are excellent in terms of their alteration and repair service - second to none in terms of price, helpfulness and efficiency
I have a SH one and have found it fab. Really hard to get one to fit B as he's got a big neck and giant head Never had a problem with it moving and he wears it in field over night.
I got it at Badminton this year so not had a chance to try it under a full rug yet but i'm hoping so as B always loses half his mane. I'm hopeful as i've had it on over plaits loads of times the night before a competition and they are never even slightly rubbed out by the morning
