Iv been looking at the Snuggy Hoods (turnout) and think they are pretty expensive!

Was wondering if they really are worth the money or should I try and find a cheaper version? If so does anybody know of any??

Or is a cheap version false economy?

Thank You!

a horse at my yard recently got turned out in one and it got caught on the gate. Horse was bit strong cob and hood didn't break or tear- instead he pulled gate off hindges and fractured eye socket :-(

Owner complained to manufacturer but was told they'd received feedback saying they ripped too easily. Personally after this I would be tempted to get a cheaper version so that they do rip!

I've used them for a couple of years, very good on greys particularly. I do think they are worth the money and I am not sure that there are any cheap versions on the market that are as sturdy a material, have zips, and offer a good degree of waterproofness. I think the cheaper variety are usually just lycra and prone to bagging and soaking up the mud.
I know that people worry they will slip or as above, get caught, but I'd say there is always a risk with anything your horse is wearing when turned out. So it tends to be you hear more about the very unfortunate incidents than the lots of people who are happy with them.
I've noticed that there seems to be smaller sizes at very reasonable prices on ebay.
My recommendation, having had both would be to go for the full hood if you can afford one, rather than the head...I find it acts as a good rug bib ( for rubbing) and keeps them warm where the rugs gape between chest fastening and full neck.

Every horse on my old yard had one including mine as it was a thick clay soil and terribly sticky. They all worked really well and noone had any injuries although there is always a risk. My friend recently had one made to measureand they were really helpful.

I bought mine in Jan this year so unless they have changed fabric since then the fabric does tear as mine did but was easily fixed. A tail bag was very useful too.

I wouldn't be without mine - brilliant for a dirty horse.

However, I do put on less rugs when using it as the nylon-type material can make a horse over heated.

I think they're worth every penny. They save hours of washing caked mud off faces, necks & manes.

Get the ears & zip version - well worth the extra pennies.

I've been using them for 3 years now all day, every day during winter (except in the snow) & never had them slip or get caught on anything.

My advice for what its worth is don't touch the lycra ones with a bargepole! I put one on my boy and turned him out in it; when I went to get him in he was standing up in the field absolutely still and looking very dejected.

When I got to him, I saw that he'd somehow got the damn thing all over his ears so they were squashed up, and worse, that his eyes had somehow got completely covered, so he was standing up there all worried and couldn't see a thing.

Luckily he's a sensible chap and was just standing rather than doing anything else.

So I'd never ever use a "cheapie" (tho' it wasn't exactly cheap) lycra hood again.

Have never tried Snuggy Hoods - one hood disaster is enough for me and I'm reluctant to try anything else.
