So I decided Bridie needs to do a bit more road work and I would like to start hacking on my own, so today I decided to lead her to my house (about 1 1/2 miles), tack her up there and get OH and my son to walk with me back to the yard. I decided to lead her there as I figured if she was going to be nervous, she wouldn't be so bad on the way back as she would be going back to the yard. Well everything went exactly as planned! I don't know what step to take next though?! :D:D:D:D

Well done :) I would keep doing as your doing for now, then I would see if I could find a hacking partner to boost your Horses confidence. When your Horse looks and feels relax walking from the yard. I would attempt to ride to your house either alone or with your hubby and son on foot. Good luck :)

No we missed all the snow luckily! I have a hacking partner I go out with twice a week but I'm aiming to hack alone eventually for times when other people aren't able to go. Should I stick to someone walking with me for a while then try on my own?

I would for the first couple of times, If your not used to going out alone. Peace of mind for you and extra confidence for your Horse

I always find long reining great for youngsters / nervous horses. They have to learn to walk out ahead of you, on their own but with your voice & contact to reassure! I can long rein my boy from one side too if he needs me by his shoulder for a what ever reason.

I start by lunging with 2 lines so they get used to one going under their tail and then i gradually turn it into long reining - in the school at first, then short walks out.

I do think if she has been going out in company a lot you should have confidence in her and yourself - assuming she has no history of napping or anything - just try a short hack on day with someone walking then repeat the same ride the following day on your own! Bite that bullet!!! xxx
