Is it wrong to be excited about winter so i can go hunting, and clip my horses and go to bed at 8pm because its dark and cold!!

Hoping winter will be like last years where it wasnt particularly cold or windy or rainy! x Rubbish summer but has been nicer all year compared to freezing winters and hot summers x

Had to ride my bike 5 miles to the stables and 5 miles back last winter too but now have my car sorted so can toot at cold cyclists as i zoom past!!

Just have to decide what clip, already booked hunting days off :O)

Is it wrong I thought 'weirdo' when I read your thread title? :D

I hope its a mild dry winter too, but I generally dislike winter. Dark nights, massively increased workload, dark nights :(

Hunting sounds good though, Ive always wanted to go but never have. Maybe this year?

Hunting awesome! its a must!! :D

I probably am a bit of a wierdo tbh haha! Im lucky that i finish work at half 4 though so can get to the stables, bring my horses in and tack up before 5 so i can get in the school before its manic or ride out before its pitch black! x Half hour makes a massive difference! x

Clipping is the best part, its like designing your own horse!! haha x

I've got mixed feelings about winter!

There is nothing nicer than having your horse all cosy in it's stable on a cold, wet night - but then you have to clean up the lovely mess he left you the next morning :D

I prefer riding in the cooler weather - horse is more buzzy when it's cold (he struggles when it's warm/sunny).

I'm going to have to clip in the next couple of weeks as mine is turning into a yeti - hope he's not trying to tell me something although there are already signs that this will be another bad winter!

I am looking forward to cosy night's in front of the fire and the fact that my sweet itch horse will not be suffering but that's as exciting as it will get for me. The dark evenings really get to me as I don't have a school so riding is really at a minimum

Babybear, i havent seen any snowberry bushes yet so fingers crossed haha x

I hate being cold but have enough layers now and decent gloves i'll be fine!! x Only think i HATE about winter is frozen automatic water troughs! Might wrap the pipes soon, even though they were fine apart from one night last year! x Frozen ground is a bit pants too so can be limited to being stuck in the school but its all part of the horsey experience! Cant be a fair weather rider!! x

Cosy nights in front the fire are a sure sign of winter! Cant beat it when you come in blue from cold, cant feel your hands and toes to warm up in front a lovely fire! (must practise lighting it!!)

I must be weird to I absolutely love winter , the snow , the frosty mornings , horses snuggled up in thick rugs stuffing there faces , running around in the snow ,Christmas ,dark nights wrapped up on settee , etc etc ,I just love it and can't wait

Don't mind cold dry winter weather at all, in fact prefer it to hot sticky fly infested summers. Not so keen on the milder wet winter rain though. But I absolutely loath the lack of light. Makes me really fed up.

Well sunsets at half six from 1st october so best make the most of the evenings, then clocks go back so will be dark when i'm leaving work at the end of October!! x

It kicked in yesterday just how close hunting is, and Ron is so hairy already I could almost get away with clipping him now!

And, OH is getting to take my sister's horse hunting this season, so we've got extra work to do, and OH is very excited about having 'his own' horse for the season!

can't wait!

I am looking forward to not having a bad arm anymore and will be dragging the horse out from his field holiday for lots of fun! Maybe not hunting for him although I would love to go (looks scary mind).

I cant wait either. For the past 5 yrs mine have all lived out, on grass no arena or stables just shelters and it worked fine. Last year we bought a lovely new boy and he struggled. Daughter is competing and we needed somewhere else so are moving to our new yard this weekend with stables and a lovely lit arena! Will be lovely to see the 4 heads over the stable doors in bad weather.

I clipped one of mine yesterday! She was doing an impersonation of a yak!

OH was gobsmacked when he came home. Not only that, I then chucked her in the field with no rug it was so warm.

I'm with you, Ribbons! I absolutely love really cold weather, especially frost, even though it causes some practical difficulties with horses. I hate summer - loathe hot weather and flies and I live for this time of year when autumn is on its way.

I agree that the lack of light is the hardest thing to deal with - I usually walk the dog at about 6 am and, during mid-winter, it means that the whole walk is done in complete darkness!

I really hope we get a proper autumn this year though - we had one frost last year!

I love the Autumn - weather is usually pretty settled and September is my birthday month!!

I have to say I prefer the dry cold to hot any day. I always get so much more done without breaking out in a sweat! Love clipping out and rugging up.

I do hate February though - bit depressing after Christmas and before any shoots of Spring. Usually pretty low on the old funds too!

Another winter lover here too.

Winter means:

Hunting twice a week

Horses snuggled up in cosy stables

Less poo picking as only turned out during the day

No flies

Lighting the wood burner

Comfort food

Snow ball fights and sledging (but only for a few days please!!)

No more mowing the bl**dy lawn

This list goes on.....!!!

(did first clip today of hairy cob - got very sweaty at fun ride yesterday, and couldn't believe how much came off him)

this^^^^ without the birthday lol but happy birthday whenever it is lol

the only thing with winter with me and my two other yard people is that we dont have an arena or anything, or electric or running water....its a DIY btw haha lol. neither of us have transport either. our hacking is good but you have to go on roads to get there so going in the frosty winter is a bit dangerous. we have fields right behind us but the farmer doesnt like us going on it in winter :/ its a shame he cant leave us a little strip round the outside...or it would be ideal....wouldnt bother me so much but i have a just turned 6 TB mare :/..........the other two have cobs so lack of exercise not too much of an issue.

also we only have an acre each (our horses arent in the same fields as each other)....throughout the whole year so winter turnout is a bit of an issue withought ,making a mess of our fields lol....good job my girlie looooooovvvveeesss her stable :)

Well, I dont hunt but I do like Autumn and winter....unless its too snowy or wet to do anything.

I'm thinking about clipping, rugs, soaking beet......misty mornings, riding through falling leaves.......:)

Top of my list this year......thermal/waterproof over trousers for riding and yard work. And some decent winter riding gloves.

Are you all mad???:eek::eek:What is there to be excited about??? Freezing cold, dark nights [have no school but I work earlies/lates so no problems there], ice on the roads not good for motorbikes or horses, , rugging, extra feed, bedding and bringing in at night vs 24/7 turnout though am leaving it as long as possible, dark mornings, chill blains, asthma will be a problem again, wearing too many clothes, frozen water and my S.A.D will be back so will have zero energy... horse clipped all year round so makes no odds there.....:(:(:(:(:(
