Sorry, totally self indulgent - but eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! My new horse is coming on Friday :D I am beyond excited. I sold my last pony when I was 17 and am now, 12 years later going to be a horse mummy again. I honestly didn't think time and finances would ever permit it so I am just so happy. He is going to be one spoilt horse :)

Vetting is finally sorted, strangles swab result back (yard requirement), transport booked, arranagements discussed with yard, saddler arranged - hurrah! It was just so nice to do all those things for a horse again, was so happy just to be telling the yard manager what bedding I want him on and to discuss his feed - that's beyond silly I know.

And I've done a mega shop, all hopefully being delivered tomorrow, as I literally had nothing left. Grooming kit, headcollar, rugs, feed supplements (that he has now), lunging gear, saddlecloths etc. etc. There's going to be a whole troop of couriers turning up at my house tomorrow.

Am looking forward to having a new excuse to hang around on here. Thanks to everyone who has given me advice in getting to this stage - hugely appreciated as very few people I know IRL are even vaguely horsey.

How exciting! :D

I had a similar break from horse ownership to you (11 years) and my heart nearly exploded with excitement when my mare was unloaded from the lorry. :p

Here's to many wonderful years of horse ownership.

How exciting :D :D Bet you won't be sleeping much this week then! :)

Not a wink! When asked just now by a work colleague if I had nice plans for the weekend my answer was - stroking my horse. I got a very odd look, but genuinely all I want to do this weekend is groom him, make a fuss of him and take photos. Poor thing is going to feel like a My Little Pony. Good job he likes to be made a fuss of really. I'm going to find it very hard to leave him in peace whilst he settles, but must remember to be a good horse mummy <slaps own wrist>

How exciting, I remember the week before my mare arrived, I was bouncing off the walls :D What's your new horse like? You'll have to post lots of photos when he arrives! Good luck with him :)

Congratulations-here's to a great future together
I just celebrated 17 years with my horse yesterday...we have both grown up together, even though i have a husband and 2 small kids now, he's still so special x

Faracat - did it all come back to you? I found myself reading my very old Manual of Horsemanship this morning as I'm terrified I will have forgotten it all!

He's a 16.2hh TB and nearly 8 years old. He is bay and I love the fact he has no white markings at all - I think that makes him really special. He is an absolute sweetheart and loves a fuss.

He is actually quite talented with his dressage, but seems to be prepared to put up with my rusty riding until I remember how to do all the fancy stuff. I took him on a hack the second time I went to see him and a bird exploded out a bush righ behind us and he was so sweet - he spooked and did a little canter on the spot for a split second and then stopped and looked round at me to say 'sorry, don't know what came over me there....' - I think his owner was worried I would be bothered that he spooked, but actually it made me feel much better as I feel I have a better idea of how he behaves in that sort of situation, and many horses would have used that as an excuse for all sorts.

He is currently referred to as 'he' because I'm toying with changing his name. I know it is considered bad form by many but he's called Spider at the moment, but my OH and I are both totally freaked out by spiders so we're not sure we can live with that as a name!

Eventually. ;)

I found that to begin with, I wanted to wrap her up in cotton wool and couldn't tell her off even when a quick 'OI!' was really needed. After about three months it all began to feel like the gap had never happened and I wasn't so worried about her all the time. I was even able to correct her naughty behaviour. It's lucky that she's actually a well behaved horse and not a pushy madam or I'd have needed much more help than I had available.

My grey was called Candyfloss but it has evolved to Floss-boss so how about something that relates to spiders but isn't so 'spiderish'?

Peter? (Peter Parker is Spiderman)

So excited for you - we must hasve pics a.s.a.p.!

Changing a horse's name is VERY unlucky, but you could add to it Like "Incy Wincy Spider" and call him Wincy!

So exciting! Bet you've made his bed up already? :-)

Can't wait to see pics of him and I love the name spider for a horse - it's nice and it will probably evolve into a nickname anyway :-)

Ghostie, good luck and enjoy - you won't have forgotten anything, it's like second nature. Trust me on this..... I had a gap of 30 years  and I found that I was like a cat on a hot tin roof for the first week or two and then settled back into it.

The first few nights I was convinced the horses would cast themselves in the stables, or that I'd feed them the "wrong feed" and find them in the morning all lying unconscious with their legs in the air! I worried myself sick and fretted for no good reason at all. The biggest problem, and where I learned very quickly to be strict with myself, is to not indulge them too much - hard, after a gap, when all you want to do is love them and feed them treats!

Looking forward to seeing pics when your horse arrives....

Exciting is an understatement :D:D

He sounds lovely.

Spy would be a cute name :-)

I like this^

I had four ponies in a row that I changed names of just tweaked them a bit to more of my liking eg Sen became Ben
Lindsey became Lady (ha she was anything but:D)

Spiders were always known as Sidney at home when I was little (didn't work I still hate the things) but I do like the name :).

Oh how exciting for you! :D And yep I couldn't put up with Spider as a name either *shudder*.

Wonder why someone would name him that, does he look like a spider? I hope not!

I like 'Parker' as in Peter Parker...

Not surprised you are sooooo excited, not much sleep for you this week and I'll bet time will seem to drag. Look forward to seeing photos of your lovely horse soon. :)

How exciting!

I am looking to buy and even though it'll be my second I am still super excited.

Can't wait to see lots of photos - there will be "this is spider standing up", "this is spider lying down", "this is him eating", "this is him drinking" - LOL

Terribly exciting!

If you want to change his name, just do - its only superstitious nonsense! My first horse's name was curly when I bought him- changed instantly to jasper. 12 years on it really wasn't unlucky to change it! Lots of people do!

Good luck :)

Thanks everyone :) I am just so stupidly excited now! Most things I need for him have been delivered today - I now have a lovely pile of shiny new rugs, a grooming kit (brushes have of course already had all the labels taken off and arranged nicely in their box), feed buckets, haynets, head collar etc etc taking up all the room in my lounge. I'm not sure OH knows what he has let himself in for :D

Very impressed by both Premier Equine and Ingatestone who both delivered next day for me and were very sweet when I called them up to say I needed them today (only day this week I could be in to sign for them) because he's arriving on Friday. Loving the nice little bags the Premier Equine rugs come in too - have lots of them as have turnout, stable rug and a million and one liners.

Thanks also for name suggestions - I'll have to see what he 'feels like' when he's here. I know his current owner changed his name when she got him, so maybe the bad luck is with her and will escape me ;)

Ooh I'm just so enthusiastic about everything today! Even the poor courier men got an earful about my new horse and the poor YM was very patient when I rang her yet again to ask questions and make arrangements.

I actually think I'm worse now than when I got my pony aged 13. I am going to bore you all to death with photos come Friday!

im so pleased for you :D :D

least you have time to organise! i viewed mine on a saturday and she was delivered sunday... i had no stable :o

Wow - that's impressive speed! I could have kissed the couriers today, I was so worried they wouldn't turn up and I'd have a wimpy fully clipped TB turning up on Friday without any rugs or even a head collar to put on him or bucket for feeding him. Being in London it's a massive pain to get to any tack shops and just no time before Friday.

How is she settling in?
