my horse has had 5 months off with some random ligament/soft tissue injury to back or pelvic area though this is a loose dianosis to say the least!! he's slowly being brought back into work (hacking out in straight lines in walk for 20mins a day) and appears sound (he was badly lame behind when in work previously) the vets so far say he looks sound and he def feels nice and bouncy. however, he still snatches at the reins occasionaly and stretches his neck right down to the floor. he doesnt snatch violently but he is quite insistint. i give him the reins and he will stretch down for a bit then pick his head back up. do you think this is a sign he's still not right?? or just fat/unfit and tired?! all his tack has been checked and adjusted to fit his new fat frame and all checks have been done to death. what concerns me is this was something he started doing when he first started going lame and he's still doing it to some degree now.

If it's muscle damage, tale it slow and try to do 5- 10 mims of leg yielding and shoulder in everytime you ride- will strengthen the muscles up a treat.

Have u had a physio look at him? If you are unsure of the exact injury or haven't had a horse with long term muscular issues before it's probably worth getting one out, if only so that they can show u exercises etc to help.

Mine has extensive muscular damage, but with flexing and and strengthening I get him event- fit every summer, and when his back is strong enough it doesn't affect him at all!!!

If u want to PM me feel free :-D

thank you, he's having physio every 3 weeks at the mo and whilst recovering was having physio every 6 weeks. she thinks he feels good, no recurrance of tightness that was previously felt. he's being doing some leg yeilding whilst long reining, have kept out of the school ridden wise to date and just gentle hacking- he is rather fat!! do you think i should let him stretch down or should i take more of a contact and push him on?

With mine when I first start to fitten him I will take a contact for leg yielding etc (i either do 5/10 mins in school first or I do a far bit whilst hacking) but other wise I don't really have a contact whilst hacking, not until he's going up and down hills easily (which takes a while!!!)

I usually allow about a month of building up the hill work and the bit of leg yielding before I start to do any proper schooling with him.

Experience has taught me to take him slow or I end up losing half the summer lol!!!
