So, feeling very sore and sorry for myself....! sympathy please! :(

Any advice please?! :D

Watching the vet yesterday take staples out of a horse's leg at our yard and she got a bit tetchy so the vet decided to sedate her.
This is a 15hh (approx) ISH mare, she's not a small horse and the vet only used 2ml of sedation drug but the mare had a really bad reaction to it.
She reared up, fell down onto her side then onto her back and started to shake. She tried to get up, managed to scramble up and ran into the stable wall, cut all her eye and mouth then somehow managed to run to the opposite side of the stable block - straight into me.
I fell over, she came down on top of me and the vet dragged me into the stable. The mare by that point was on her side, shaking, hitting the stable wall and managed to get to her feet after about 3 minutes.
I've never seen anything so horrific in horses (only in dogs, but they don't seem to panic as much and obv haven't got as much weight to throw around!)

Think I was running on adrenaline, the vet got the staples out and I managed to try and help calm the owner down and get buckets to clean the horse's cuts, and getting a cold compress on her eye which was pretty swollen. She is okay, she's hurt her legs so the vet is out again today.

I called my mum and she took me to A&E, have hyperextended the tendons in my ankle so my foot is all swollen (not broken thank God), the tendons in my knee are all inflamed, a little concussion (hit my head on a wheelbarrow - only me!) I've got about 20 million bruises and cuts and I've taken a kick to the back. So I'm feeling pretty damn rough today, I'm on crutches and have to rest my leg with ice packs :(

Sympathy and chocolate please!! I feel like I've been beaten up!!
And typical, I wasn't even riding and it wasn't even my horse!! :P

Good grief, how awful for all concerned. :eek:

Glad you are in one piece (just!). Think a large quantity of hot chocolate, chocolate cake, biscuits and symapthy is called for.

Guess you'll all remember to wear a hat, body protector and anything else you can lay your hands on if there's any danger of a repeat performance!! Hindsight is such a fabulous thing :D

Oh I know! Typical isn't it? Obviously nobody imagined that the drug would have such an adverse effect on her :(
Apparently its happened before so they're starting to look into that batch now they think it might not be right

Yeah it was awful to see and like I said she's not a small horse she didn't half go down with a right thud :(
I've seen it in dogs but never a horse and its 100x worse! She's got a few superficial cuts but she's none the worse for it except a bit stiff I expect. I have been put on "box rest" for 24 hours so no horses for me today!!! :(

If it's any consolation, I had to have a leg rest during all of my exams this year, complete with ice pack ;) Good old horses.

Hope you and the horse all make a speed recovery!!

There's one good thing, I suppose if I'm on rest today I can get some work done...theoretically anyway....:D

She got my leg more than anything just a bit bruised and sore everywhere else!! Worst thing is I'm meant to be driving back to uni tomorrow!! :(

ETA in all 9 years of riding, that's my first A&E trip because of horses so I don't think I've done bad! ;)
 
OMG what an awful experience for you all, just shows how quickly something simple can go so horribly wrong. Lots of good vibes for your speedy recovery and the mare too. Hugs and hot choc - although perhaps something a bit stronger required!! Purely medicinal of course!

Perhaps something stronger would be good but I don't think it'd get on too well with my painkillers ;)
I will find out how the mare is later on today, I just really hope that this pain in her legs is just stiffness after her falls and knocks yesterday.

I know I wasn't even riding :p the irony!!
And you know as all this was happening, Kelly popped her head over the door, shouted to me then went back to her hay net....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Oh my! You are so lucky to have not broken anything. Hope you get better soon. Best thing is R.I.C.E for you leg (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) I'm sat here (and have been for 10 weeks!!) with a broken ankle and this has helped mine with the pain and swelling.

Hope the horse is ok too. Lots of healing vibes coming your way. :D
 
I know I was very lucky to have got away with what I have!
Yeah I need to drive back to uni tomorrow I can't get around that but I will deff R.I.C.E for a week or as long as I need after that...housemate is designated driver!!!!!! :)
Think mare will be okay think she is probably just feeling sore like me!

Yup, there's a few of us sat on our butts wishing we were up and about and riding and generally not ouching. Ah well. Time will do it :) :)
