I got in to racing as we have a race yard near us and I knew the head lad.
I also wrote to Kim Bailely explaining my experience and he offered me a head girl job! Didnt take it though!
I loved working with race horses and having worked with eventers and show jumpers, racing was my fav and I do miss it. Money isnt bad either, especially if there are some good horses than win!!
My mate works at a yearling stud, says she hates it but really she loves it as she's been there for 7years. You get some great perks, bonuses etc. Still get the same hassle/ injuries though as you are working with highly strung racehorses
I was offered a job with the trainer I have the shares in the horses with a few weeks ago, money was good for horse work (more than I was getting paid at RS), plus there were bonuses etc. Would have loved to have taken it but getting too old for horse work and enjoy having spare cash and being an 'owner'...
Theres usually loads of racing jobs going, check H&H or the National Trainers Federation site as there you can find any trainers that are local to you and just give them a call...
How old are you?
If you are 19 or under (may be under 19, not sure) then a 3 week course at the racing school is mandatory. However, you get booked onto that course after you start working for a licensed trainer.
A way in is through the longer courses at the racing school. They are aimed at school leavers with no experience with horses, so are generally a waste of time for people like you that have worked in the horse industry. Plus of the course is that you are guaranteed a job to get through it.
Trainers usually like to emnploy people with prior horse experience, the riding part of the job is quickly learnt - every yard has some quiet ones that anyone can learn on.
There are always jobs going, you just need to ask around. Just dont go for the nearest, ask around and go to a succesful yard. The higher profile they have, the more likely they are to stick to the HRA rates of pay and hours standard(they are hot on this at the mo, but some still and work around it) . This doesnt necessarily a mean a big yard, just a yard that are succesfull with the horses they have.
A good tip is to talk about the staff already there - if the majority have been there years its the place you want to be.
A job in racing is potentially the most well paid and enjoyable job in the horse industry - but there are bad ones about.
Good luck.
Im 21 i have 8 yrs experience and having my own horse in that time! i have never worked with race horse before but have worked at a stud yard with arabs! not much like it but must be a bonus!
Have a look on the racing post website, they put a lot of jobs on there when there up! Have worked in racing and it's good fun, early starts but your afternoons are normally free!
