well my horse done his check ligament in march this year we got over it and was going really well bought a trailer was all ready for some little shows. I got him in last Wednesday lame could not find anything then next morning leg was swollen (other front leg not original injury) got vet out bute for a few days rest etc scanned today and a small tear in the other check ligament so start rehab all over again although not as bad i'm gutted. My question is he was out with another horse just this year (was on his own or out in big field with 6 others previously and was fine) and in that time he has done both check ligaments and it seems to be when the ground is sticky and slippy, so my plan is to put him back on his own but i'm going to be paranoid now incase he does it again or worse ( when back living normally) so what would you do i no we cant exactly bubble wrap them but cant help but worry he is not a silly horse he is normally very sensible. any recommendations for turn out boots or other suggestions welcome

How is his leg conformation and foot balance? A lot of check ligament injuries stem from issues with these IME.

Sadly you can't really prevent horses from 'being horses' in the field; my chestnut has had to be retired after injuring sdft and check in the field :(

Unfortunately we can't wrap them in cotton wool. There isn't an answer other than keep him in stable permanently but that's not helpful as horse may get worse in a stable when the frustration of being inside sets in! What has the vet recommended? My mare has done her hind proximal suspensory - I turn her out as normal with the others - I've just accepted that if it gets worse it gets worse, but keeping her in would have been dangerous for her and me. I've stopped worrying!

When my mare did the same the vet recomended ultra-sound as a treatment to encourage the healing proccess, I felt that it worked, maybe ask about it but it had to be done as soon as problem was diagnosed.

Boots are not any use at preventing soft tissue strains/sprains and are only really of limited value with knocks.. They also raise the temperature of the tendons meaning they are even more likely to be damaged.

I totally agree with this.
