Some of you may remember my absolute delight in buying my first horse! That delight and happiness hasn’t gone away…

unfortunately however, after a mere 4 days of ownership, a series of unfortunate events took place as I was mounting him (involving thunder), and I came off, and broke my ankle in a rather spectacular way and subsequently now have a plate and pins in my ankle ?

I have around 3 months of recovery ahead of me (non weight bearing for 6 weeks to start with). Gutted really, as I really want to build this relationship with my gorgeous horse.

have others been in a similar situation? How do I get212783DC-DB6E-4128-BBAB-E6A85FA0F3AA.jpeg41AA1515-033A-481A-9A09-19F5BD130A47.jpeg out of this miserable funk?

Look forward to your recovery! Plan all the things you want to do. We used to race motorbikes and one time hubby came off his and smashed his leg , he has three rods and several pins! And couldnt walk for a year. Couldnt move much for 5 months.
plenty of visits to your furry friend and plenty of physio as soon as your ready! I took him to a hyperbaric chamber and that helped his recovery. Hope your feeling better soon! Pins and plates are easier than letting the bone heal, so should be a quicker recovery

Looking on the bright side at least it was not the horses leg and your treatment is free!! Sorry I hope you heal well and are still able to bond with new horse while you are recovering. I hope the rest of your new horse ownership is less dramatic.
That’s exactly what my husband said. And you’re right. Thank god for the NHS.

This is just super duper unfortunate timing!

So sorry to hear about your accident. If you can manage to get to the yard to give your new horse a cuddle then do that. But just take it easy. Hope you have a speedy recovery

Blimey what bad luck and timing. Yes I’ve broken my ankle and I wasn’t “a good patient” and now 6 years on I have a number of niggles and sharp pains which i might have to have investigated…so my advice is…rest, box sets, planning, radio plays, reading and let yourself heal properly.

Awful luck, sorry to read that. Trying to look on the positive, it gives him more time to settle, and you to get to know him. Will someone be able to keep him ticking over for you? That way you get to learn more about him from the ground. Not great, I realise. Wishing you a full recovery.

Thanks, I’m trying to visit as much as I can.
Thankfully, he’s been on full livery (for now) and I am paying for him to be ridden a few times a week. My husband has also just started to have lessons, but he won’t be ready to ride him anytime soon, bless him.

I spectacularly smashed my ankle up a few years back now, and was being wheeled about in a wheel chair for 12 weeks - I couldn't get the hang of crutches at all - it was a thoroughly miserable time, and I missed riding so much. A very kind friend who happens to be a fabulous GP rider would come up a couple of times a week and ride the horse for me - I'd wheel myself to the arena to watch, and other lovely kind friends would do the odd hack or lunge for me just to keep him ticking over. When I eventually got back on, it did take a while for my confidence to return and my ankle to feel like it matched my unbroken ankle, but got there in the end. This frustrating and miserable time will end...I promise!

Oh dear. You've already had great advice so I'll just wish you a speedy recovery. Do what you're told and don't rush, it's counter productive in the long run. Jigsaws are a nice way to pass the time ;).

I'm sorry you are facing this - ankles are no fun. However I sometimes think that time "just spent" with a new horse rather than "doing things" can start to build a fabulous relationship. Although it was my horse that was on box rest/restricted turnout and not me, I used to just go and sit in her tiny paddock and read a book while she grazed and I was amazed at how much it deepened our relationship. Realise that the weather may be against you soon for doing that and you may have to rely on having a driver but anything similar that you can think of to do will not be time wasted.
