Im thinking of living my mare out all winter because she seemed better and more relaxed. I was just wondering how many live them out and how many rugs they got on ? The only thing im worried about is her fine legs and the cold, so is there anything she could wear in the rain , mud etc. Thanks :)

Hi,got 3 TB's at the yard and they rarely come in over the winter.(-10 one night, they were in then!).They all seem to do ok,2 over 20,the other 9 yo.All have the heaviest Weathabeeta rugs with full neckpiece, keeps them warm as.The thing you really have to watch is frozen rutted ground, not a good thing for fine dainty legs.I find most of my lot would rather be out than in,as much hay as they want and they're quite content.

yea , also the yard horses rarely go out and she would probably be in 6days a week and i really dont want any bad stable vices and grumpyness :)

Mine lives out most of the time. Came in overnight for a couple of nights when we had over 2 feet of snow last winter but was out every day. Never wore anything heavier than his 200g half-neck weatherbeeta - he was unclipped though. The most important thing IMO is that they have access to plenty of hay. :)

^ ditto this^

My boy wintered out for the first time last year (what a winter to pick!!) and fared FAR better than the previous ones when he'd been in at night. He's also unclipped and never needed more than a MW... grew a lovely thick coat. But he did become a bit of an eating machine!!! :D
