I have a terrible feeling this is going to be a long one...

Well, as you all might know I loan little Sam, a Welsh C. He's a lovely, kind animal but was cut late and can be known to be terrible naughty, though can't they all?!
Well I've been doing a lot of hacking out with him, with friends and other horses, and also a bit of in-hand walking as when he goes out ridden on his own he gets terribly scared and just reverses.

He has been improving, people up at the yard have been saying they've seen an improvement, which makes me feel grand! They've said he seems calmer, more relaxed, and I'm convinced it's because I've got him in a routine, and what I say goes, all the time. :D

Today we took him out, she hacked him and then I brought him back, or... that was the plan. She tacked him up, and told me that her and her friend had started taking a leadrope with them, clipped under his chin to his bit, incase 'anything went wrong'.

When I hack him out, he does spook, and he does sometimes reverse and have a paddy, but I just put it down to him being inexperienced and not used to it all. She's clearly worried. Well, we were going along and she kept asking me to hold him, because she thought he was going to spook. I knew he wasn't, he was just looking at something that had caught his eye.

We were going up a hill and he started to pull his usual trick, stopping and refusing to move, then slowly reversing. When I'm on him, I give him a tap, sit quiet and open my hands, not allowing him to turn. With me he goes backwards a bit, then gives in. But with her, he didn't even have a chance to be good. She just went 'S***!!!' and told me she was getting off. I asked if she wanted me to get on and she said yes, so I jumped on and did my usual, sit quiet, talk to him and ask him to move on. He went backwards, thought not as fast and as menacingly as usual!!

Anyway, she begun to pull on the leadrope, clearly tightening it under his chin, and started whacking his side (catching my leg) with the rope. I wanted to ask her to let go, but I felt rude.
She clicked and whacked and pulled and made me feel totally inadequate until he started trotting. Finally. Anyway, she held on to him all the way then, not trusting me, clearly.

What do I do?! I know what the pony can do, even though he's not mine, and I trust him to actually behave. She just gets scared and gives up on him!!

Gosh, cookies and milk for all who read it and can help!

Haha, I'm clearly ranting so much that I'm getting everyone confused!! :p

I'm loaning, but she rides him too.

What the issue is, is that I've worked hard with him, building his confidence on hacks etc. and she's just undoing all the hard work by being unable to trust him. :/

I think it is a difficult situation you are in.You seem to be getting him confident and doing as you want, even if sometimes it takes a while!
Then along comes his less confident owner and she sets him off again.
I am not sure what you can do if she still wants to ride him .
Could you ride him when she is not there?
Is it possible for you to have full loan?
I assume she is older than you and that it will be difficult to ask her to leave you to deal with him when he is awkward, maybe say something like the last time he did this I just sat quietly and he went on ,can we see if it works now.
Not much help, but stick with it and prove to her that you can do well with the pony.:)

He is awfully stubborn, and it can take days for him to understand something's not scary!!
I guess she's not really looking for someone to full loan him, she's in with a 'bad crowd' and just wants to know there's someone always there for him.
I do ride him when she's not there, that's when the majority of my hard work is put in haha! She is older than me, though I feel bad when I say I have more riding experience. I don't like putting people in their places!

I would just try and avoid her then if you can.Its sounds as if she is trying to impress her "friends" with her knowledge!
It is a shame though as it sounds like you are doing really well and helping the pony.
Good luck:D

Are you intending to buy this horse?

Just hack him out alone without her and enjoy him. Why do you have to hack him out together anyway?

If it bothers you so much ask her for full loan without her riding him. If this isn't possible then this might not be the right arrangement for you.

One day she is going to turn around and want the horse back anyway and are you then going to feel your 'hard work' was a waste of time? That's loaning I'm afraid..

mollyh ; Well, I'd like to buy him, cause he's a top little guy. But unfortunately, it's not looking good in the job department!!

That's a shame. I hope you can work it out. It won't harm to tell her how you deal with his issues in the hope she takes it on board, but other than that just enjoy him and help him all you can while you have the opportunity to :)

this is loaning!! my advice would be to get a proper loan agreement written up! or perhaps let her ride in the school if there is one? you must have agreed to let her ride when you agreed to loan him? i do however sympathise as i know both pony and owner!

I feel your pain, I loan/share my boy - kept on private yard at house of owners who are only there at weekends usually and then said owner only rides occassionally....have been told I need to work on his behaviour as owner can't catch him and when he first arrived he was fine. Err, I have no problems catching him - I even get a whinny

Well when I first came up, Sam would bite occasionally, and never fussed for human company, now he trots over when it's just me on my own! Isn't it fantastic when they whinny at you? :p

Dammit HHO on iPhone I wasn't finished!!
...and a trotting up to me horse. I suggested that he takes every opportunity to feed and groom his horse but it fell on deaf ears. No doubt I'll be having another 'discussion' when again he tries and fails to catch his horse!lol
