It seems my horse has concave soles with under run heels, constricted weak frogs, crumbly hoof walls with stress lines.... the digital cushion is solid...
there will be more :(

His feet always looked nice in shoes, guess i'm just a little nervous about being able to make the changes happen...

He was sound in shoes... am I making problems for myself.... :o

Extremely interesting reading though!!!!!! :)

I'd be thinking you are saving yourself problems in the future. Even if you do put shoes back on some time, you know know his feet are not as nice as you once thought!

Is this a book? Where can I get it? I have just posted about mine in veterinary... Now starting rehab work.

Very interesting, but scary!!

I knoow fw! Its just scary really, I have never tended to think about it, my bit was booking him in to be shod every 6 weeks and counting he had 4 shoes still attached before each ride... this is something else entirely!

There's "looking nice" and there's "anatomically correct"... Which brings me to think, I never really saw healthy feet until a few years ago... I'd only ever seen shod feet and didn't know if they were right or wrong. Thank goodness for the Internet or my horse would probably be dead now.

My mare is the same age as Buddy. She has only been shod once, I bought her in October so we are about 5 months in. It hasn't been difficult at all, honest, or scary. She is self trimming and sound. I am trying out hoof boots as you know for endurance rides but we have done one with no boots and she did 20km on rough ground in 1hr30 and passed the vet :)

Yep tallyho I sort of admired how my old boy's feet changed when his shoes came off for retirement, however these won't of been actually particularly healthy hooves as he became severly lamanitic, makes me wonder just how many obvious symptoms his feet showed me that I missed...

FW I will never ever scoff at your hoof boots again, I am having a total turnaround! I will take some pics of Buds feet, now and as we start work again!

Don't forget that all the antibiotics/drugs and the shock of the injury will be showing up - in his feet - in the near future. It will all grow out and down as soon as he starts moving around more. It sounds to me like Buddy will really benefit from being BF - you will be amazed how the feet can transform over time.

I horrified the fellow livery again today, by rasping Shys feet with my riders rasp. Got a caustic "are you are farrier again today" remark. Oh how I laughed ;)

Yes I guess your right shysmum, didn't think of that!!
Can't wait to see the changes, I think.... :/ still nervous...

haha lucky you have a thick skin :P do you use it to tidy up the edges?

It's this thing -

I use it every couple of weeks to keep the feet balanced - my farrier thinks it's a fab tool, and he encourages me to keep using it between full trims. But just to up the ante, I always get out my farriers rasp too, hardly ever use it, but that adds to the looks of dismay ! Tell you what, as a barefooter, you learn ignore the comments.
