Does the above annoy you?

So is chasing wild mammals without killing them illegal or not?

The Government inist it is, so do LACS and the RSPCA.

Do they actually have a clue what the law is?

Antis on this site seem to be divided into five distinct groups.

Which do people most agree with?

Ok, this is me trying to be nice...some say I creep up on newbies to the hunting forum and that I'm quite savage...personally I think I'm like a lamb so here goes...

Why are you against hunting?

There..that didn't take your head off did it?

There used to be hunting near were i grew up, i personally seen a fox being ripped to shreds by a group of dogs from the hunt.

Also they ended up on my dads property when they werent giving permission to do so, causing my little pony to go crazy, was only 10 at the time and i wasnt told what happened to her, but she was pts from her injury.

Dont mind ones that are just chasing a scent but i think its pure cruel that they chase a live animal as weve had cats killed by the dogs too

'Fox ripped to shreds'

*sigh* Oh hell, why is it people who aren't in the know always use the same old line when its simply not true?

There is a video on youtube, the fox was ragged around the neck and hardly had a speck of blood on him. So obviously not 'ripped apart'. Its also very interesting to know that so many avid followers that are out twice a week never see a kill, yet you, someone who doesn't hunt has seen a kill.

Being anti and having cats is extremely hypocritical, I'm always so ashamed of people who are anti hunting with hounds but own cats. If and I say if as I don't know whether it is true or not, the hunt in your area crossed your land without permission then they should be very ashamed, no hunt should go on land where it is not welcome (note: neither should sabs!)! Regarding your pony, how did it die? Obviously it wasn't the hounds so I don't quite see how the hunt can be blamed.

So now im a liar? Seeing dogs fight over a fox was not a pretty sight, how can you question it when you didnt see it?

I never blamed the hounds for injuring my horse, but I know that my father made the hunt pay for the pony as she got over excited about the hunt being nearby.

I dont go out and protest about hunting, and as for owning a cat, yes it hunts, but thats nature, its something that they will do.

The last thing I wanted to see was the kill, and trust me I wish I never seen it.

So what pleasure do you get from it?

So now the hounds fought over which one got to kill the fox? You're killing me with laughter!

I doubt very much that the hunt paid for the pony, they would not be liable for such a claim.

They don't hunt, ever watched your cat kill something? They play with it, you could go as far as to say they torture it, cats are cruel animals.

I'm glad you agree that hunting is nature, therefore natural.

What do I enjoy about hunting? Everything, very hard to explain.

The excitement on the way to the meet of an unpredictable day, turning my horse out smartly, the chitter chatter at the meet, the spirit between the old boys who are retired and this is the only time they get to gossip, the hounds, the sound of the hunting horn, the smells, seeing the fox, hearing the hounds in full cry, galloping so fast that the air is so fresh it makes your eyes cry, the adrenalin rush, meeting new people, the gossip as to who's riding who, the hunt servants-so nice to look at, Sloe gin..or other tipples, the smell of a sweaty horse, the smile on the HM's face, the jokes, the friendliness, the social gatherings, the hunt ball e.t.c e.t.c Oh and the satisfying feeling that you know the fox is either dead or alive, not lain injured in a hedge somewhere and of course that it was killed in the most humane and natural way possible.

*the above is pre-ban of course - now we just follow a smelly sock, still ocassionaly see a fox though*

By the way Cobmania, although I'm like this is the Hunting forum don't hold it against me in other areas of HHO, I'm lovely really just the subject of hunting can bring out the gremlin in me :smirk:

I voted 'Mairi'.

severnmiles - your beautifully written paragraph about the pleasure you get from hunting all sounds fabulous, but apart from the last sentence, surely you still get all the same pleasure now from following a scent?

No. Its predictable and Landowners don't want you on their land without the hunt providing a service. Killing foxes is the service that they want. Which is why we are still allowed to hunt over their land - we are sill killing foxes, we are still laughing at the Law. You?

Cobmanic, I'm REALLY surprised that you own a hunting cat. Hunting with hounds is one thing, but the unspeakable cruelty of cats is something else again. I always make a point of shooting any cats seen on my land, and feel I am making a real contribution to animal welfare by doing so. Do hope you agree.

I think the results above are indicative of what a great law the Hunting Act is.

Most people think it's completly ridiculous after that come people don't actually know what it is. The rest are evenly divided into people who think it is two completely opposite things.

Then of course there's the 'peta contingent', but I suppose you always get that.

Being serious now, one of the big strawberry growers in Herefordshire that supply Waitrose had to shoot cats, although leaving some to keep the rodent population down they shot loads! I bet they ended up at the local Chinese!

Plus, of course, the poetry of seeing a terrierman digging out a fox whilst baiting it with his dog...

Baiting is illegal and has been for over a hundred years, obviously you know nothing of proper terrierwork...terierwork is one of the quickest and most humane method of fox control, the Government obviously think so hence no ban on terrierwork.............Carreg

OH is a terrierman, he doesn't bait anything, more respect for his terriers than that, plus its illegal.

Digging out is like all other areas of hunting, swift and humane fox control!

Are you seriously claiming, Rocky, that terriermen don´t ever deliberately encourage their dogs to fight foxes?

Peta,

Have you ever been involved in terrierwork? Have you ever watched first hand terriermen working their dogs?

If not, I suggest you keep your ignorant mouth closed until you have gained some practical experience.

What he's saying is that he doesn't encourage terriers to fight foxes, that people shouldn't encourage terriers to fight foxes and that encouraging terriers to fight foxes is illegal.

What you are saying is no less prejudiced than saying that black people deal crack.

Sorry Carreg, but what the government think is not good enough for me! The goverment think the use of hounds to kill a fox is inhumane.

However I personally believe that terrier work is humane when carried out properly (as I'm sure you and 99% of terriermen do, you always get the t*ats that account for the other 1%), I doubt if Peta has even seen a working terrier in the flesh let alone one in action!

I tear animals apart and I'm conviced it's not cruel.

In fact I'm shortly going to pop one in the oven and this evening the whole family will tear it apart together and wash it down with a nice fruity little red.

We'll have fun as well, which makes the whole process better and more justifiable in my book.
