It seems that half the country have seen these eastern european men with their white transit van and red land cruiser so why can the police not find them and why has no one spoken to them...

I am not saying that it is not true at all just why has no one spoken to them or at least let there tyres down and called the police.

Surely if the police pick them up then they have at least got a starting point for getting some of these horses back.

Sorry just can't make sense of this...Please feel free to lambast and disagree as you see fit

P.S keeping fingers crossed for those who have lost horses I would be devestated and my boy is so trusting he would walk off with anyone, even without a head collar.

I agree it is very strange. I have their reg no in my car and if I see them I will be following them and calling the Police.

Its got to be a gang of them......oh and Horsewatch are saying that its a Red Land Rover, you say a Land Cruiser and I heard Pick up truck????

Its a white van and horse watch now say its a red land cruiser. The Reg. No's of which are in another topic in the stolen horse and tack. I believe its a gang of people although, im not sure letting down their tires would be a good plan, apparantly they have quite a nasty dog!

I think that everyone is right to be cautious at the mo, there has to be some credible truth in the rumours, im taking them serious look at the posts about horses stolen last night alone, 9 from Cannock 4 from litchfield and some from Clowne and Farnsfield and thats just last night!!

They have got a white van, thats a dead cert. Its the red car thats been described as a Land Cruiser, Land Rover or Pick Up but bearing in mind the amount of sightings there have been there could well be more than one 'pair' of vehicles????

Given the geographical range and the number of sightings from reliable sources I'm assuming it is a large gang.

White transit type vans are ten-a-penny so an ideal 'cover'. Likewise red 4wd are easily found and less memorable than many other vehicles in rural locations. It seems to me that a well organised gang could cover the areas suggested with 'cloned' plates from one original purchase on more (maybe stolen?) vehicles.

What I'm not clear on is how they can take so many horses at a time.

I'm just now (having had a confirmed suspicious sighting at our yard) hoping and praying that our horses stay safe and that this gang are closed down asap.

A scary and worrying time for all of us.

quick update...just found this on another forum...had wondered why there had been no sightings in North wales so far......

This was posted today:
The two men were found in Brymbo (north wales) yesterday, taking photos of a heavyweight cob. The owner&OH went out and challenged them and they claimed to be taking photos for a calander, they then asked the age of the horse and the owners OH got angry and, well..lets just say they deffinatly got what was coming to them!!

I dont think they'll be coming back here for a while!! XD doesnt mean they wont go to other places though, so still be careful =]

Just read this on another site.....

I have just had a call from a friend who has explained that the theives have lots of vans in operation with the same registration and ARE OPERATING AROUND THE COUNTRY. They are also using lots of the same model red land cruiser type vehicle.

This is to cause confusion to the police and horse owners.

I am of the opinion my friend has this information from a reliable source.

Please be alert. Especially those of you with horses for sale, be careful who you give information to

Surely no one is saying horses are being sold as a joke? If so, it's pretty sick

if any one is concerned in their area of the country , i would phone the police to try to ascertain what has really happened , and if any horses have been stolen , i am sure there has been people out and about who want to steal horse , but i got into a panic when in reality as yet nothing has happened in our area as confirmed by the police

I do not blame anyone for not approaching! I have heard they have a horrible pitball that they will set on anyone, plus I really wouldn't want to approach those kind of characters, if they're breaking the law stealing horses I'm sure they would probably go a couple of steps further. I also mentioned in another thread on RR that I though they may be cloned vehicles, for example one in birmingham creating a fuss whilst a duplicate in Devon gets away with stealing some horses.

Police are useless and are probably following the 'innocent until proven guilty' strategy. I'm being followed by some idiot who sits outside my work in a car and sits outside my house in the same car and I get abusive calls every now and then (probably from him?) police say they can't do anything as the calls are off witheld and he's parked in a parking space and technically not doing anything wrong.

It's all rather frightening, their attitude when it comes to horses is a bit pah anyway.

I know that it's real risk that horses get stolen, but i wonder if all these sightings recently about East European men are "urban myths".

One of the biggest problems the Police are having is that the numberplates appear to be being swapped around diferent vehicles:

MESSAGE .................Look Out for vehicle with Number Plate N 253 XAJ
On the 29th May 2008 a rural premises in Hockley Heath was visted by 2 men described as Eastern European who made enquiries about setting up a tent in a field and horses. They had a black Peugeot VRM N253 XAJ. There are other reports of this number plate on a White mini bus in suspicious circumstances and an internet posting about this VRM on a red Land Cruiser in relation to possible theft of horses.
If you see a vehicle with this number plate please dial 999.

They are still about so we have to be vigilant.
