So pleased with Lari today

I thought I'd give Lari something interesting to do today so threw on his long reining equipment and long reined him straight from outside his stable and onto the yard outside.

This is the first time in two and a half years. My 'driving' skills were a little rusty and he needed a bit of encouragement in places but he was such a good boy as there was a lit of stuff going on, tractor filling up a water butt, horses running in the field, people turning out but he listened to me and grew more confident.

I only long reined him a couple of times half way in both directions (I will do the other half and attempt the scary bit with a helper leading next week) as I wanted it to be a positive experience, he got a little bit sticky in one place but i repeated my instructions and he visibly relaxed.

We went in the school and I led him over some poles and then walked him backwards between parallel poles stretching his head down a couple of times and he did some lovely carrot stretches. The whole thing was 20 mins tops as I wanted it to be short but sweet and it's given him a bit of variety in his life.

I honestly couldn't be more proud of him today for his first time in a long time.

That’s lovely. I might do the same with my retired boy. He’s quite sound as long as he’s not ridden. Only 18 and overweight so a little walk work would be good!

Do you have poles PP? There's so many things you can do with poles if you have any like a labyrinth and raised poles, the only limit is your imagination.

I used to step over a row of raised poles with him and he used to watch which of my legs I exaggeratedly picked up first and would follow suit with his own front leg. Made my heart soar.

I'm conscious I daren't lunge him again due to that bad DDFT injury he sustained at retirement two years ago but I can do other stuff. Using bits of carrots instead of sweets now too lol

I sold my poles a couple of years ago but I do have some cones. Will think what else we can play!
