Skinny Minnie arrived yesterday and went straight in with Fat Lad.

Her new MW turnout arrived today (Equestrian Clearance are fab!) and OH and I went to put it on her. I realised that I don't actually know anything about Skinny Minny, so wondered how I would a) catch her, and b) get the rug on her!

I needn't have worried, I called Skinny Minny and Fat Lad and rattled a bucket. They both came trotting down the field and both waited patiently while I put a feed trug in front of each of them (small handfull for Fat Lad!). I then brought SM out, undid the rug she came with (lightweight, ripped and ill fitting), and put on her new rug. She never batted an eyelid, even when the wind blew it over her head and she couldn't see!

I really wanted to wait to post pictures of her so there was a good before and after comparison, but couldn't resist this picture of her with a spring in her step and showing off her new coat :)

It humbles me to think that a three year old baby who is as skinny as a rake and has problem skin is so loving and gentle and accepting.

ETA: Her white sock looks a bit pink, as if bleeding but it is just the orangy colour of the mud round here :)

She looks like she is pleased with her new rug:D but he seems to look as if he is wanting one too.;)

She does look happy, but there is no way on earth Fat Lad is being rugged!

a) He has a lovely thick Highland pony coat and is toasty and warm

b) I would never find something in the right length that would fit round his ginormous neck
and chest!

He has lost weight in the month since I have had him too!

You can see all her ribs through her winter coat :( She also has areas of bare skin, mainly on her neck and around one eye, although I haven't given her a really good inspection yet due to the weather today! Not sure what it is so will take photo's and no doubt post on here asking for advice :)

haha this made me laugh your fat lad looks like my fat lad. I had vet out today and he was admiring my fat lads lovely thick winter coat. He has never had a rug on and is out 24/7 but has plenty of fat lad fat to keep him warm(nothing to be proud off..good doer). Another vet near me thinks he has been clipped in the summer! He must shed a few pounds in fur. Changes shape etc

Good luck she looks really happy and he looks bemused!

The patches do look like that :( Her body seems ok at a glance (as said, windy, rainy and dull and I couldn't see too well earlier), but her neck has patches and all round her nearside eye is bare.

Will give vet a ring first thing, suppose a de-louse won't do her any harm even if it isn't lice.

Well, if it is lice, then it should be easy to fix and much better that, than a mystery skin condition. :)

She looks lovely in her smart new rug. What rug is it?

The rug is a cheapy, think it is a Falcon? The aim is to get her naked next winter, so didn't want to spend a lot - if the 'go naked' thing isn't for her I will get her a better one if she is going to be rugged every year.

Should be working.....

Give her a quick delousing - doesn't cost much as will make her more comfaortable almost immediately as the little suckers die off  Just give her a good brush 12 and 24 hurs after the louse powder - helps get rid of them quicker:) And jus tgive her rug a good airing in between taking it off and on again. Should sort it out if its lice:) Get nice gentle shampoo - Lavender wash is ideal as it its cooling and soothing and doesn't need rinsing so you can give her a good hot clothing with it before and after the Lice powder. Will help with the bald patches too - and then slap on loads of Wonder Gel - again will help heal and soothe them and stimulate hair growth :)

She lookd very sweet and he looks like a big hairy hooligan :D:D:D

As I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong), the bald patches are as a result of scratching due to itchiness caused by the lice?

Would a horse rub her eyes on something? Her nearside eye is bald all around it and both eyes are bloodshot, perhaps consistent with rubbing the actual eye? I haven't seen her rubbing yet, but it has only been 30 hours since we got her and have spent about 3 of those hours with her.

Right, operation de-lousing will begin tomorrow :) I will also contact the lady I got her off who had taken her in a week or so ago to let her know that Skinny Minnie may possibly have lice so she can appropriate action with her other rescues.

Bleddy Heck, I am itching like an itchy thing that's itchy now, all this talk of lice!

Congratulations on your new sweet heart, I just love their names. lol
I picked up a 3 year old stallion a few weeks ago that was going to market , I wormed him immediately as he was rubbing his tail bad but after 4 days he was still rubbing it, I looked under his mane where he was clean and saw lice  I clipped a small area there and there were thousands of the little beggars. I was very surprised though that he was only rubbing his tail  He has been deloused and I will repeat soon.
Good luck
