Took my little JRT to my friend's farm today, he said he had a terrible rat problem under some straw bales up in his back field. I figured this would be the ideal opportunity to give Lu her first go at ratting! She is not even 2 yet & has never so much as seen a rat, but as the bales were lifted she knew her job alright :) Bless her she knocked up a body count of 7 or 8 single handedly within a few minutes, called her off after an extended battle with a particularly large specimen which was really giving her some stick, she dispatched him but took a few bites to the muzzle first. So proud of her I bought her some pigs liver for her tea :)
Was wondering if anyone had any tips as to what to put on rat bites? Washed her face with some dilute hibiscrub (then rinsed off), anyone got any other tips?

Good for her. It sounds a bit blood thirsty but I love watching terriers ratting. Re the bites, as long as she is up to date on her vaccs, particularly lepto, I would just keep an eye on them and make sure they are clean, if they seem inflamed in anyway probably best to pop her to the vet to get checked out.

I must admit to having a liking for ratting its amazing that dogs just know what to do. With my previous 2 LHs 1 was absolutley briiliant and never got bitten and the other Jesse used to get bitten a lot but would never let go.

The advice MM gave you as regards to bites are spot on, enjoy your ratting.:)

Thanks, was amazing to watch her work, clever girl. All her vaccs are up to date, her muzzle is a little pink in places but will keep an eye on it & def see the vet if they get nasty. We are hopefully going to link up with a friend & his more experienced JRT next time, will be interesting to see how they work together. Bless her she was piling in & surrounded by rats, but there is a limit to how many one dog can take alone I think she would appreciate some back up! :)
